sup every1. im just a newbie with a trek 4100 and i figured i join bikeforums now that i started upgrading my bike. my first upgrade is a bontrager supertock wheel at the front. i got it with the tube for $110 at the bike shop so i dunno if that's a good price or not. i know my bike has a long way to go, i'll most likely replace the crappy insync fork with something more respectable:D and then a bontrager rear wheel with 8spd cassette and derraileur. i just started riding on dirt trails at parks around my area, no 4 ft jumps or stuff like that. i like to ride fast and faster!

Why don't you go all the way to 9-speed? And why did you upgrade the front wheel? I didnt' know the 4100 came with discs ...

the front wheel had broken spokes and since the matrix 550 rims that came with it bend easily, i figured id replace the broken spokes in the front and get double-wall rim too. i thought i could get two double wall rims front and rear and keep my spokes but the spokes werent compatible with the double-wall suntour rims i was being offered. i was being charged $75 for the sun-tour rim and 14g spokes to be installed on my 36hole hub but it would take days to set up. so, the guy at the bike shop showed me this nice bontrager rim and i was sold. i had no plans of spending so much for bike parts but now that i have, i think ill keep upgrading my bike some more.

I just bought a new fork (z1 fr), new front wheel (mav 317 w/ xt disc) and a avid mech brake, get my wheel/brake stuff today in the mail, i'm psyched. I have 8spd as well, there have been a few threads on it, but my thought is that if i upgrade to 9spd i'm buying a new bike, or at least a new frame as mine is old at this point. You usually end up spending MORE on bike parts than you wanted, no one wants to skimp if at all possible ;)

I'd go for 9-speed only coz you'd be spending about the same amount of money upgrading to 8-speed anyway.

It seems like you've caught the "upgrade fever" :D ... it never ends, I dont' think ...

Only ends when you get to the top!

If you don't know what that is, here's my take on it!

Intense Uzzi SL
Full XTR
Hayes Hydraulic discs with RazorRockRacing levers.
Profile Hubs and Cranks.
RaceFace Diabolous Stem
Chris King Headset
Easton Riser Bars
Thomson Elite Seatpost
Mavic D321 rims
....etc.

Make sure you do reasearch before you buy. Don't let them talk you into things you don't wanna buy. Shop around for good deals.
