Yesterday I finally installed the UN72 bb and Phil rings onto my R20, with Redline black cranks and 48t chain ring coupled to the S/A xrf-8 hub in 451 rims. I went for a short hilly test ride to check how the lower gears were for climbing and the 7th & 8th for fast downhills. Not sure of the gear inches etc, but I think I can get up most climbs ok and 8th is, as Jur says "TALL".

This morning I took the Wasp to my Sat morn ride to test her out against the cf boys, some teasing comments were uttered, like, "Hey Steve, are you going shopping after this?" and "you're not bringing THAT on this ride are you?"......
I wasn't sure how I'd go, you know, with all those expensive full size bikes and some of the riders are guys I've raced with so the pace at times can be fairly high.....Let me tell you, the Wasp flew high and proud, I had no problem working hard in the pace line, in fact she led the bunch out in a sprint, kept them honest out the front and covered any attacks. She only suffered a little on the climb of the day and that was because I was stonkered.
Near the end of the ride I come up to the wheel of one of the guys who made a teasing comment earlier and said "Has she proven herself now?", he quietly replied, "Yes".
One thing I'd like to change is the weight of the hub, but apart from that....I'M ABSOLUTELY AND TOTALLY STOKED.

I know just how you feel. I modified my Downtube into a fast bike and joined my regular roadie friends on some rides. Kept up with them just fine. Felt good, especially after some of the comments I got at the start of the ride.

I think there is a special pleasure to ride a bike which

1) you built up from scratch
2) is looked on scathingly, then shows its class.

Of course, apparently not many people realise that it's mostly about the engine. They look at the small wheels and think, "Toy."

That hub is a heavy sucker. I just took my wheel off last week to install a slime liner, and I'm used to the ultra-light Swift wheel, so that thing felt like it was ready to drop to the center of the earth...

I don't use 1st gear on my commute, but today I did a 60km ride with Connie, and used 1st often due to the low low pace.
