Well, if things go according to plan, I'm going to attempt to break my ride mileage record tomorrow (Saturday), and do 70+ miles. If I am successful, I will also bring my odometer into the four-figure zone: my first thousand miles!

The weather tomorrow will be kind of gross - humid, hazy, and in the 90s, with a chance of severe thunderstorms. Hopefully that will have as little of an impact as possible.

If I reach my goal you'll certainly hear more about it - watch this thread for details.

Good luck, Scott. How long have you been riding?

Good luck, Scott. How long have you been riding?

Since late May. This is my first season riding regularly again in a long time.

Off to start my ride...

Looks like I'm going to have to try again tomorrow. :( Three miles out from the house, I got a rear flat. No problem, I think, and go to replace the tube. Small puncture through the tire from some crap on the road. As I'm pumping the tire back up, I'm debating in my head whether to head home after this so I can get the tire back up to proper pressure with my floor pump, when the $#%^& presta valve snaps off! By this time I was not in the best of moods, and with the oppressive humidity, I decide rather than trying to patch the first tube (I do have a patch kit but had never used it), I called my wife and she brought me home in the car.

At home I used my last new tube and rode the bike on the trainer for a half-hour. Then I patched the old tube as a spare (in a much nicer air-conditioned environment). I'm off to the LBS to pick up some tubes and maybe a pair of Descente bibs. :)

Will try the ride again tomorrow. At least the forecast is for temps in the 80s, though the threat of thunderstorms is pretty much constant with this humidity.

Holy cow that is awesome. At this point last year, I had been riding just about the same amount of time and only had 450 miles. Nice job.

Thanks for the encouragement, Brian. I'm fortunate enough to have a tech job with very flexible hours, and get in a lot more riding than I would be able to in a strict 9-5 environment.

I did the ride, breaking my former mileage record and passing the four-figure odometer mark! I feel okay, except for my butt. Given my affinity for longer rides, I kinda wish I had ordered a Brooks saddle to try out. If I got one now I'm sure it wouldn't be broken in by my century. Maybe I'll try one next year.

Ride Stats:
Ride Time: 4:59:05
Total Time: 5:23:23 (includes rest stops)
Distance: 72.2 mi :D
Avg. Speed: 14.4 MPH
Max. Speed: 38.2 MPH
Odometer: 1004 mi :D

I used a small handlebar bag this time, and found it very handy. I tried eating while riding, which works well for simple stuff (gels and Cliff bloks, but not Powerbars).
