I had an awesome idea today. Granted, the idea just struck me today but I can and will post more details once things are worked out with the shelters. That probably doesn't make sense, so let me explain:
My birthday is Nov 17th and I decided today that I'm going going to take longer and longer rides until I culminate these long rides in a 100 mile (fixed, of course) ride on my birthday. A short time after that, I was struck with inspiration! Why not do this for a good purpose? Upon figuring out how to do this I am going to ask people to pledge .05, .10 or .25 $ (or any amount, flat rate or otherwise) per mile that I will donate to 2 animal shelters here in New Mexico. One is called Watermelon Mountain Ranch and I chose them because they are one of the few no kill shelters that take in pit bulls. Linda Blair (yes, that Linda Blair) and I had a long talk about that place a year or so ago, and I love pits so that is why they get half. The other half will go to the Santa Fe School for Deaf Dalmations. The beautiful boy in my avy pic is a deaf, epileptic, furry bundle of pure joy... the best friend I've ever had. So if I am able to track this place down (I'm not even sure they still exist, the number I found for them on the net doesn't seem to work) they will get the other half. I could not think of a more awesome thing to get for my birthday, other than the chance to give. I'm really stoked about this idea.
Upon working out the details with my chosen charities I will create flyers, post links etc and anyone who is interested in contributing can do so at that time. If anyone is interested now, there are some very simple things you can do to help. For example, if anyone has any experience with anything like this please lay it on me. Also, if anyone is interested in participating in this you can let me know and if it seems like there is some interest I may be able to get some sponsors, maybe like people to have tents/tables/fueling stations etc. I will not have any sort of entrance fee for this, there will be no financial gain for anyone other than the animal shelters. Unless, one of the local bike shops wants to chip something in for prizes or something, but I doubt that would happen. Another way you can help is to suggest a name for the ride. As of now, I haven't gotten past "Ride for the Doggies on My Birthday." Finally, pass word on about this if it sounds good to you and maybe this can really be a good thing.
I'm suuuuuper stoked about this!
