A question for all the Campy cross bike riders: What type of cranks and brakes do you use? The standard Campy 135mm BCD doesn't allow for decent gearing. Plus Campy doesn't make a cantilever anymore. I'm curious what you're using.

Ancient Dura-Ace. Replace a ring maybe, but the ccranks and bottom bracket appear eternal.

I'll probably be using an old 105 crank I have laying around....if not I'll go with a Campy CT crank

FYI, there aren't cross gearing rings available for the Campy compact bolt spacing. The best you can do is 48/36.
You can just run a standard 135 bcd crank though and get a TA specialties 46T outter ring. a 46/39 is great for cross racing. Pair it with a 13-26T (or 29) cassette if you are just noodling around. ;)
My wife and I both run Campy on our bikes. She runs a single ring up front usually a 39T, with an 11-25 cassette. I run a 46/39 and a 12-25 most of the time. I have a custom 12-27 cassette I run on a couple really hilly courses. We both use Paul Neo Retro brakes.
i use bontrages race lite cranks, with their 46/38 chainrings. works great with my chorus stuff and a 12-25.
A Truvativ with 48/38 and some Tektro cantis for now.
FSA 'cross cranks and Avid BB7 brakes. if you have to have all-Campy, you could use their v-brakes with Travel Agents. or you could look for vintage parts - Campy ATB stuff comes up on eBay all the time.
but i like briscoelab's Neo-Retro idea. i love Neo-Retros... *drool*
I plan on using whatever crank i can get thats cheap.
Actually a GREAT cross brake from Campy if the Veloce mini V brake. It can use a standard brake lever, has good mud clearance, and is powerful. Lots of people in Europe are starting to run mini Vees, especially in Germany. But, I'd still skip that and get some Paul's.

Supposedly, the Mirage/Veloce mini V-Brakes use regular brake levers. The Neo-Retros look great though.

one wonders why Campy sells two different flat-bar brake levers - one for sidepull and one for the mini-v's.
not saying you're wrong, i just wonder what the difference is...

One would wonder that, wouldn't they. Yet Campy USA says the Mini V-Brake, like Tektro's, can use a regular brake lever. I'm a little confused myself. In Europe, cross racers are using the Mini V's with Ergo levers. There are no Ergo levers that can use standard V-Brakes without a Travel Agent or similar device. The pics I've seen don't have the Travel agent either.
Tim
The mini V brake works perfect with Ergos and no travel agent. Trust me. I still think you're better off with some Paul's though, especially if you ever get into mud.
My email from Campagnolo was extremely specific, the Vs are NOT for road levers. Like ALL V brakes the road lever doesn't pull enough cable. You can get it to work as long as you keep the pads adjusted close.
Hell, Campy's official position is that not one single piece of their kit is certified for cyclocross. I'm serious. They say their gear is tested and certified for road use only and that nothing they make is approved for 'cross.

They are just covering their @sses. There are LOTS of people running the Veloce mini-v brake with Ergos. They are the same basic design as teh Tektro minis. Road levers pull more than enough cable to make them work.
Full Veloce w/ Veloce UT Compact crankset. Brakes are Paul canti's.

What rings are you running on the Veloce UT? Best I could track down was 36/48. Stupid Campy weird compact bcd!
I'm running a Chorus UT standard crank with 46/39 rings.
That's my one gripe about the Campy cranks. As such I'm running 34/50 factory.

FYI, you can get TA rings in 48/36. That is at least a little more reasonable cross gearing.
Tim, not everyone is able to get the Campagnolo mini-v's working effectively. There are lots of posts on the Tour Magazin forum about them. The cross guys like em, although some prefer the Tektros as they are lighter.
Am I right in thinking that some of the Campagnolo compact cranks do use the standard 100bcd and some don't? I read that somewhere. Miche make an Italian compact if heritage is key, or you could use a Sugino XD.

I think I've heard that as well... the carbon compacts (record, chorus, some centaur) have a propriatary BCD, and the alloy (centaur, veloce and below) do not. I have a Veloce UT compact on my road bike, i'll see if a 110 BCD ring fits on it tonight and report back.
All UT compacts have the campy specific compact bcd. The older Centaur and Veloce compact alloy cranks did however use standard 110bcd spacing.
Au contraire. I was able to fit a 110 bcd generic chainring on my Veloce UT compact tonight. All the bolts screwed in just fine. As a note... the tall pin on the large chainring that usually hides behind the crankarm; it can't hide behind the crankarm if using a non-Campy ring because of the whole "hidden fifth" thing. so everything is rotated 1/5 of a circle. I'm guessing that if you rotate your small ring appropriately as well, you'll have no shifting problems with the ramps and pins being in the correct relative positions.
Pics when I find my USB cable.

That is interesting. I am pretty sure the Centaur UT cranks (not the new carbon ones) use the weird Campy spacing though. (although I could be wrong)
I think you'd be fine without even rotating the small ring as far as the shifting goes. Especially if you're talking about a small jump from a 36T to a 46T or something like that.
I'm really happy w/ my Campy setup. I'm using TRP's carbon canti's w/ Spooky pads. IRD has a 12/32 cassette that I've ordered but not received yet.

Have you considered using the inner two rings of a Campagnolo triple? That could give you a 39/30 combo.
