Check your local craigslist. You can find quality stands for cheap. You'll probably get more for $150 that way.

I recently bought this stand (http://www.rei.com/product/736990) for $149. Suits me just fine.

Donna, I just got that stand, too, and I'm wondering if you got the clamp to go vertical on it? For me it only wants to go horizontal. I've pulled the clamp out and rotated it, but it doesn't seem to go back into the tub in the vertical position.
The Park PCS-1 has such a heavy base that it is stable no matter what crap you throw at it. Two years working with it haven't made me regret buying it, and it can be found pretty cheap too.

Just in case we're talking about something different, here's the clamp I have.

First I turn this counterclockwise until it's loose.

Then I can rotate the clamp in the socket anywhere I choose.

While holding the the clamp in the place I want it to be, I turn that loosening handle on the other side clockwise until it is tight.

If you loosened it all the way, you can take the whole clamp out of the socket. The clamp looks like this.

Donna, yeah, that's the one I got. The clamp end won't go all the way into the tube in a vertical position. I tried to force it in and couldn't get it back out without a hammer, and even then it didn't go all the way in. It doesn't rotate in place, right? You have to take the clamp end all the way out and put the square end back in rotated 90 degrees, right?

Mine will rotate in the socket quite easily as long as I've got the opposite end loosened. I'm wondering if there's something up with yours. Is the socket end of your clamp lubed the way mine is in the pic? (It came that way.)

I just bought a Park PCS9 on closeout at Trek store in Madison Wi for $61. Regular price was $105. It works great, has the same type of clamp as the one you have. It will hold bike on seat tube or top tube just fine.
