It's the start of week three of "Back on the Bike." Yesterday's 16 mile jaunt put me at 156 miles on the odometer in the past two weeks. The sit bones are still kind of sore, but I'm getting used to the old gel saddle on my aged Bianchi. I headed out this morning, bound to get in a few miles before the heat of the day took hold. My usual checkup run down my street - no parts falling off, OK. Then down to the high school for a couple warmup laps - feeling strong this morning. It's been a couple miles - I'm good for at least ten now. Turn on to the road to head for the beach when I feel a sudden squishiness from the back. My rear tire had developed a weak spot in the sidewall and blown out.

Fortunately, I was only about a mile from home, so it was a short walk beside limping old Bianca.

Gang, I felt like somebody had taken my toys away. I was warmed up and ready to go and really looking forward to this ride, and I've been deprived. (Pore, pore, pitiful me!)

Maybe this is a sign from $DEITY that I need another bike! Yeah, that's the ticket. Surely my noble ancestors wouldn't have delayed the hunt simply because one horse pulled up lame - they'd have gone to the stable and mounted another! On the other hand my noble ancestors were potato-grubbers and poteen-distillers for whom the job of mucking out a stable would have been a promotion...

Heading for a bike shop to get a tire and tube, and lust over the new steeds in His Lordship's stables...

The first time I blow a tire, I am getting a new bike. :D (I wish!)

I keep expecting a blow out on my Schwinn every time I ride it...cheap Walmart tires and tubes, less than true wheels, bad roads and a 250 lb rider should spell KAPOW(!)...but nothing yet.

The Hardrock tires seem bulletproof with its Armadillos and thorn resistant tubes. That means it will probably blow one first. lol

Naw, but you might want to find a folding tire for an in-the-pannier spare, at some point in the future, maybe buy 2 new tires, keep one in the garage as a spare, or put two new ones on, and keep the good old one as a spare, if it happens again in the future, just swap tires at home and head back out.

Considering Bianca is old enough to vote and nearly old enough to be served strong drink, and considering that the root cause of the blowout was because the tire was so old the cords were rotten, it's really not wanton indulgence to start looking for a new set of wheels. But that's another topic.
