It's the start of week three of "Back on the Bike." Yesterday's 16 mile jaunt put me at 156 miles on the odometer in the past two weeks. The sit bones are still kind of sore, but I'm getting used to the old gel saddle on my aged Bianchi. I headed out this morning, bound to get in a few miles before the heat of the day took hold. My usual checkup run down my street - no parts falling off, OK. Then down to the high school for a couple warmup laps - feeling strong this morning. It's been a couple miles - I'm good for at least ten now. Turn on to the road to head for the beach when I feel a sudden squishiness from the back. My rear tire had developed a weak spot in the sidewall and blown out.
Fortunately, I was only about a mile from home, so it was a short walk beside limping old Bianca.
Gang, I felt like somebody had taken my toys away. I was warmed up and ready to go and really looking forward to this ride, and I've been deprived. (Pore, pore, pitiful me!)
Maybe this is a sign from $DEITY that I need another bike! Yeah, that's the ticket. Surely my noble ancestors wouldn't have delayed the hunt simply because one horse pulled up lame - they'd have gone to the stable and mounted another! On the other hand my noble ancestors were potato-grubbers and poteen-distillers for whom the job of mucking out a stable would have been a promotion...
Heading for a bike shop to get a tire and tube, and lust over the new steeds in His Lordship's stables...
