General Cycling Discussion - Rack or Trailer-a couple questions on protection from the elements while transporting

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'am having my hitch installed Saturday and will be looking to upgrade my current trunk mounted rack which I don't full trust to either a hitch mounted rack or a small trailer of some type. My wife and I are really starting to ride quite a bit and I want something that provides some ability to protect the bikes from the elements while being transported if caught in the rain. Does someone make a large, heavy cover that is made to go over the bikes while in a carrier or is a trailer the only way to get that protection? The thought of driving in the pouring rain and having our bikes drenched does not appeal to me. Also, I see a Tandem in our future, by next year probably, are they rack-able with a good hitch rack? A hitch rack is my preferred choice but I MUST be able to cover the bikes in some manner. Suggestions?

Also, are there any links for Trailer info? I have a lot of Rack information but not much on trailer options. Whats the best way to go? Thanks!

I have a buddy who used a small Wells Cargo trailer for a long time. It seemed pretty nice because it gave them a place to change, sleep, lock the bikes up in, etc. It really was a multi purpose solution, and he used it to store his bikes in at home, which kept them from cluttering the garage up.

Home Depot sells tarps and bungee cords. That's probably your best bet if you want to completely cover the bikes.

Here's what you might want to try. Get a cover for a large gas grill. They usually have draw string bottoms.
