Hi all
It has been a long research on this matter so far but i would like your expert opinion on this matter. I am in the lookout for rims and tires. My options are:
Rims : Sun Singletrack 550-570g Awesome graphics.
Mavic F219 (mavic reputation)
Tires : Panaracer FireXCpro 2.1kevlar
Maxxis HighRoller 2.1kevlar.
Any opinions?
My current setup X139rims with Specialized RollX tires (steelbead).
Will i save weight with the above options? Will i improve durability? I ride a HT on trailriding/lightFR conditions over dirt and rocky terrain and hardpack with wet conditions 50%.

Do the High Rollers come in 2.1? Where did you find them? If weight is a concern I'd definitely go with the Panaracers wrapped around 517 rims with XT hubs.

I have been using Single tracks on my DH racer and they have handled everything quite well. I have had them now for 1 yr.
I also run the High Rollers on my xc and dj bikes. They work well in just about every thing except real soft & deep sand.

thanks dbd , so SingleTrack with Highrollers is a better combo than F219 and FireXC?

In my opinion yes. They will be slightly heavier but it is a great set up.
If you will be mostly on hard packed then I would suggest running a High Roller Semi-slick in back and the reguler HR in front. If you will be on soft over hard or differant types of terrain then use the regular HR's front and rear.

thanks man. my current setup is rockhopper 03 ht ,marzo Z1dropoff fork and XTdiscs ...i hope the singletracks with the maxxis will complement it accordingly.
I'd always suggest the Mavic rims over the Suns. Not that the Suns aren't great, but the Mavics are better...ask your wheelbuilder. Of course, the lacing pattern, spokes and nipples you spec out will have a great deal to do with how light and durable (not mutually exclusive) the wheelset is.
As for the tires, the Panaracer Fires are just darn good XC tires, and are also pretty darn light in the folding version. You cannot go wrong there.
Mavic 521's laced to XT hubs (if money is no concern, Chris King), with double butted 14/15/14 spokes and alloy nipples.
For tires, run a NOKIAN NBX 2.3. The Kevlar bead ones only weigh 650 grams total.
You want light but strong. Lace them 3 cross if you use disc, but if you want super lightweight and use V-brakes, lace the front radially, and the rear semi-radially.
I prefer building them 3x, because then there are no worries about strength.
If you want to run even lighter, a set of Mavic Crossmax UST rims and UST tires, with TI spokes. They weigh a ridiculously low amount of grams.
Also consider the SUN Rhyno Lite XL, their relativley inexpensive and are light. if you want light but durable tires, get the NOkian NBX 2.3 or 2.1. their about 570-700 grams depending on the size.
