Race- Valley City Road Race, Men's Category 4
Where- Valley City, OH (a few miles from Grafton Reformatory)
When- 10:00am, August 25, 2007

First and foremost, I have to thank Snakebite Racing for hosting this race, the course was awesome. The course was a 12 mile road race, involved two hills of considerable grade, and some pretty good downhills. Theonly incidents involved one guy losing his chain coming out of a turn while standing (he rejoined the race on the lap) and some crazy brakers who hampered my race. I think the two largest teams there were working together, but I can't be sure.
The race started awesome for me. there were 20 people in the race, and I stayed within the front third of the pack the entire time and didn't get out into the wind much at all, and watching for the guys who need to be watched. There weren't really any sizeable breaks, they were kept under control completely.
On the last qurater of the last lap I stated making some moves on everybody. On the first hill I drafted to the top and caught a solo break to try to speed up the race a little bit, during the descent I had a big, dopey grin on my face, and one guy looked at me, did a double take and asked why I was smiling. I didn't really tell him why, but it was then that I knew that I could win the race as long as I didn't crash or flat.
I let a few more people pass me and got into 5th or 6th position in the line. At this point we were looking at about 1.5 miles to the finish.

It was amazing at how good I felt. I felt like I could make it to Cat 3 by the beginning of next season, and I felt like whoever opposed me in the Junior ranks would soundly be smacked down should they so desire to challenge me. It was one of those solo rides that you remember because you're in Nirvana and you're riding completely effortlessly. I can't even remember a mile of that race because I felt so calm and under control...
Until the last half mile. One of the only things that could stop me did. Going into a right hander, I went with all of the leaders around the turn wide, and what happens?
The guy in front of me hits his brakes for some reason, and I was close enough that I had to react FAST. I squeezed my front brake and when he kept on slowing down I squeezed the rear and locked up the rear tire for a split second. In that time 5-6 riders passed me on the inside of the turn.
Next up was a left hander and I wasn't in the right spot at all for that turn and had to slow down further so as I didn't start an accident. Next was a right followed by a left onto the last hill until the finish about a quarter mile from the peak.
On the climb I made up 4-5 places and outclimbed everyone within reach of me. Suddenly, I was all alone. nobody within attacking distance (or attacking state) behind me, and only one guy who I might be able to catch ahead of me, far ahead of him were the leading riders; I think the first 5-6 riders. Even if I had a McEwen-like sprint I couldn't have caught them.
Luckilly, I passed the guy within range of me 4 feet from the finish line. I tihnk he just gave up, because I was only doing 25mph and he was coasting.
In the end I either got 6th or 7th place, I'm still not sure.

I wish I could be happy about the result, but I should be getting better. I've got no doubt that I could've won that race if I was near the front and climbed like I did. I may not have won if there was an all out sprint, but it's a possibility.

This is just a fiendly PSA reminding you that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. That is all.

You came close to tasting it. Remember what training schedule got you to have a chainless day.

Yeah, that sounds like a bike race :)

One time, I was feeling better than ever, going into the final 200m, decided to pass on the right just before the last corner, got out of the corner, and there was a dropped M45+ rider from a previous race spinning home in the gutter. Full brake down to 15mph, jump back into the pack in about 25th, finish like 8th. Ugh.

You, are up way too early for a Sunday. Which, by extension, means I am too. Meh.

Formula One gets me up early. Boring race today until Wonder Kid blew up his tire. Some good passing from Trulli on those Honda's a few times too.

Back on topic, I've noticed that I always feel better on hilly road courses. I'm not very good at climbing solo on training rides, but I can always outsprint someone up a hill.

lol, I remember when 8:30 seemed early. I've been up long enough that I'm already considering Second Breakfast. Kids change everything :D

Good post. Chalk it up as a learning experience, so you're better prepared for next time. Racing definitely has a learning curve.

Looks like you finished up 8th, not too shabby. You managed to stay in the top 50% of the finishers.

I'm glad I didn't come up to this race. I'm not real interested in prizes (not that I would get any) but I am hoping to end up with some upgrade points in the near future. Driving that far to do a race with less than 25 racers would pretty much be a waste of my money. :(

I wonder if I got 8th or not, I know I passed a guy about 2 feet in front of the line, hopefully I got marked ahead of him. I really should have done a whole lot better than 8th.

I think you'll find, in time, that what you "really" should have placed and how you actually place are two completely different things.

Being stronger than other people doesn't mean that you should have won the race. Just because you're capable of X wattage for a certain time period doesn't mean you're entitled to anything. I've found that out through trial and error myself.

Yeah, I know. I actually don't know my wattage, so I guess I'm not entitled to anything...

I agree completely. There have been days that I have felt extremely strong yet finished like crap because of getting behind chaos or missing a break. Other days I have felt lucky to even stay with the group but have ended up finishing in a decent position. Never know what is going to happen until it is over.

+1

I learned that last week in my first race. My inexperience led me to second instead of contending for first.

It is mostly tactics that will win or lose in a crit...

And this is what they should really explain to you before you have kids. Mine let me sleep 'till 7:00 today. Latest I've been in bed in a long, long time.

I'm going to give a safe estimate of 400W.:p

Actually, if everything goes according to plan, I'll know for sure pretty soon.

You can ballpark it based on TT times and speed, again I'm guessing you'll be at 260-270 FTP. I know what some of the juniors you were against at nationals put out and it sounds about right.

Go with 400 though. Confidence never hurts in this sport.

I prefer not to ballpark, I prefer to shoot it over the fence and into the lake.:D

Quoting my 20MP is so much more impressive, when it all boils down...

That, and my only "FTP" test has come in a College A's crit where it was hot and heavy from the gun, with no place to hide. And, given the non-static nature of crit racing, that was a poor approximation. Accidentally deleting the data after the race and not being able to see the normalized was painful.
