They can do weight, bodyfat, muscle mass, hydration, BONE MASS? VISCERAL FAT?

Tell me what to do with my visceral fat and bone mass values.

If you're referring to the Tanita floor scales, the body fat measurement is virtually useless.

+1000. Mine has said 5% since I got it. It didn't even change when I put on 30 pounds!

Yeah, but not just the bodyfat. I'm talking all kinds of things they claim it can do, bone mass and visceral fat? Jeez.. that's quite a stretch don'tcha think?

Well if they can't get the bodyfat part right, I would think the more detailed information would be even less accurate...

I've found mine to be useful ONLY for comparison purposes. In other words, if you are consistent in terms of when you weigh yourself (I do it right after I wake up in morning), you can compare the BF% numbers over time to see which way you are going in terms of gaining/losing fat. That method works very well for me. For an absolute number, I don't think it's very accurate.

Seriously, what does one do with the visceral fat and bone density numbers?

Geez you are like a little baby. Look here (http://www.tanita.com/IconLegendIron.shtml).

As I said, these things are worthless. I gained 30 pounds in a very short period of time, and much of it could have been considered "visceral". The total bodyfat never changed from 5% and the visceral never changed from 1.

Visceral fat would be good to know if you're at risk (because of family history or being overweight) for heart disease. Bone density would be good to know if you're a woman at risk for bone loss/osteoporosis. But like everyone's already said, Tanita numbers aren't all that accurate.

Visceral fat is supposedly more harmful for you than subcutaneous fat. These types are just what they sound like: visceral fat resides in your abdominal cavity, enveloping organs and structures (veins, arteries, etc) in your gut; subcutaneous fat lies below the skin and above the muscle.

It used to be that men were more susceptible than women to visceral fat, and therefore more at risk for heart disease because of the clogging effects of this fat on structures in the abdomen + chest. (Think of the "apple" or beerbelly shape of a fat man vs. the "pear" shape of a fat woman.) But that's no longer the case, with obesity levels tracking ever higher.

Bone density would be good to know if you're a woman. But unlike bodyfat, it's not something that fluctuates up and down day to day...ever. Nor should it. I don't think it's affected much by hydration or time of day, so the Tanita bone measurement might actually be quite accurate. I could be wrong about this, though.
