Fifty Plus (50+) - Rode My Age Today - 51 miles

Turned 51 today, and when I got off work, I decided to "celebrate" by riding my age. Did it in under 3 hrs. Average speed of 17.5 mph. Full report can be seen here (http://nopinchflats.blogspot.com/2007/08/rode-my-age-today.html).

Great job! Happy birthday! Good for you! Perhaps one day I can do the same. I have ridden to work (10 miles one way) and plan to do this much more often. Maybe with the practice I can do my age too. I just turned 53 last week. Again, good job!

All these lucky people with birthdays in the Summer- Try it in January with the wind and the rain and the cold- Thats why I try to do mine in late spring or Autumn.

Nice to know that so many of us are riding their age after the initial thought of it has given them a heart attack. But for someone to do a days work and then do it on the Spur of the moment is stupid. Glad to see that you are keeping up the spirit of the Forum- But try and act your age next year and do it before work- Then you can have a good days rest when it doesn't matter.

I remember when I first started riding my age, there was no way I could be concerned with my average speed. I pretty much averaged "slow" with occasional "slower" but thru sheer determination I made it.

Good for you! I turned 63 in June and rode my age a couple weeks ago, not even close to 17mph though.

Well done.Thanks. I've always given my mother credit for being a smart lady. She served as an elected judge when many of today's "feminist icons" were in junior high, and IMO, her delivering me in August is further proof. :) I like to think I inherited enough sense to stay inside in rainy, windy January weather. :)

As regards riding 50-odd miles before work, to be on time, I have to leave the house about 7:30 am. Figure 30 min. to clean up and grab something to eat before I leave, so I have to get back about 7:00. Three hours of riding time means leaving at 4:00. Leaving aside the problem of riding a couple of hrs in the dark, it means getting up around 3:30-3:45, at the latest. :eek: Not gonna happen.

I've done metric and imperial centuries, but this is the longest I've ever ridden after a full shift at work. An after-work metric might be doable, but I'd have to rig my light kit up, and the battery is heavy (I don't like riding fast at night w/less than a 20w halogen spot beam). Hmmm... I'll have to think about that.
