Classic & Vintage - Hi, I'm new-- and I need some advice.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, I've been lurking for a long time... Now, I need some advice! I had an old 520 that I got for $50 at a garage sale and LOVED it until it was stolen. I've been looking for another nice 80s Trek since then, and I don't want to do a ton of work on it.

So, three questions for you nice folks:
1) What would you pay (or wouldn't you pay) for an 80s steel-frame touring bike?
2) What other oldish, cheapish bikes would be comparable to the old Treks?
3) How much do these babies weigh? I remember the 520 being pretty heavy.

I saw at a Trek 710 on craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/bik/405319173.html.
It looks beautiful but way too expensive. Is this the going rate for these things?

Thanks for your help, folks.

It's not unusual to find 80s steel-frame bikes with higher end double-butted Reynolds or Columbus tube sets and Shimano or Campy components for $200 - $500. Mid-level Schwinns and Japanese brands like Miyata are good candidates, and for a touring bike you should look for a frame with longer wheel base and trail like the Schwinn Voyageur or Passage.

Weights will typically run around 25 pounds or so.

Thanks. I've heard good things about Miyatas as well. Appreciate your help.

A couple of other Japanese brands to keep an eye out for are Panasonic, Nishiki, and Bridgestone.
