The lust for new wheels has been kindled, but at this point I'm only at the, "Boy, there sure are a lot of shiny bikes out there" phase. I'm having fun on my old bike, but think there might be even more fun on a modern bike. I've owned four bicycles in my life (a balloon-tired bomber, a C.Itoh ten speed from my paperboy earnings that got swiped, a Peugot UO-8 Trophee de France that my siblings cannibalized whilst I was overseas in the service, and a Bianchi Boardwalk), and the most recent of these was purchased over 18 years ago. I wonder if the more experienced members might give me a bit of advice.
Some background: I'm fifty, 6'1", 275 pounds and dropping at ~ 2 pounds per week due to diet, walking, and cycling. I'm not a "go fast" person, but I like long (2 hours +) rides. I live on a small peninsula east of Boston, so I'm perforce a street rider, no lonely country lanes around here. More like careless cars; sand, gravel, and glass on the side of the road; MUPs crowded with skaters and walkers and kids, oh my!
My question: Am I insane to consider pretty road bikes like the Specialized Roubaix? Should I stick with looking at sturdier touring bikes like the Trek 520?
