I know they're available on eBay but my patience with sniping, shill bidding and etc is getting thin. I really only need one for a project so if you got an extra laying in a parts bin drop me a PM. If you have to sell as a pair drop me a line too, I'll find something to do with the spare.

Shimano bar ends are OK too.

I just went through all of that crap recently, and I agree, it gets old. Just when you think a set is in the bag, someone steps in with a $50 bid. They aren't worth that. My dilemma ended when a set of 9sp Shimano, Friction/Index bar ends showed up in the local Craigs List for $30. While that doesn't directly help you, I was working up another scheme simultaneously, that would have taken me to the same point.

If you don't know about them already, stop over at rivbike.com, and look up his $25 bar-end shifter pods. They are basically the same bar-end boss as Shimano's, or remarkably close. Marry those pods up with a set of downtube shifters and you're in business. If you need the latter, I have a couple of different pairs that you might have for less than $10 delivered. One is an old Suntour stem set (would be just fine, since all you need are the levers and friction washers), another is a 6spd friction/index Shimano, and I even have a new 7spd friction/index Shimano. Nashbar has them for $6.99, complete with inner cables. They are solid aluminum, and actually look just fine. It would be a simple matter to trim them down a bit, if you wanted to make them more traditionally sized, for bar-end application.

And yes, bar-ends, on a moustache bar rock for commuting.
