Northern California - How many bikes do you have and why?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On the club ride today I met a guy who owns 8 bikes! I meant to ask him why so many and how he decides what he'll ride that day but he dropped me climbing pretty quick. So, I'll ask you; how many and why? In case you are wondering why I am asking, I'm still looking for an angle.

My primary road bike for fast road rides.
My mountain bike for mountain biking.
My tour bike for commuting & touring.
My fixies for social and poser rides.
My singlespeed road bike for long distance rides and social rides.

Now, don't ask me why I have 4 fixies....because I don't know why...:p

6 because I didnt know I needed a reason.
2 road bikes, one for long rides and one for shorter rides.
2 fixies, one for road and one is a track bike.
2 mountian bikes, one full suspension and one singlespeed.

Actually I think I need another one.:D

I have two and a half and would like to add 1 more.
2 road bikes: 1 for commuting, the other for everything else
1/2 an old mountain bike... it's missing the front tire, but is otherwise rideable. I think I'm going to donate it to my brother.

Hoping to add a full suspension mountain bike soon :), course then I'll still need a hard-tail and a touring bike hahah

Hmmm, I have 4 bikes.
1 mountain bike. This is actually what got me started last year. I haven't been on a bike since '93 and had no interest until one of my co-workers asked me to accompany him to an LBS. I saw all the bikes and the bug bit me and the poison is still in my blood.

3 road bikes:
1st is an '84 CenturionI bought back in '05 because it was $50. It sounded like a good deal and it hanged in my garage for 1 1/2 years until I restored it because of the bug and turned it to my all weather commuter.
2nd is an '06 Fastback because I wanted a newer, lighter bike I can use for hill climbing, weekend rides and basic tooling around.
3rd is an '06 Teramo because I figured I need a lighter bike and mainly because I am a brat.:D

Its all that damn Road Cycling forum's fault I tell you!! Them OCP's and their gourgeous bikes!!!

Me: 1 Road Bike, 2 Mountain Bikes (1-hardtail w/front suspension just because, 1-fully rigid - keeping 'cuz it still runs great)
Wife: 1 hybrid
Son: 1 bmx style bike
5 total

Would consider others but no room :(

Just my road bike. I want a mtn bike but I don't really have the room for it, plus riding a mtn bike cuts down on the amount of time I can be on the road bike, and I'd rather be on that one.

Comfort bike for those times my back goes out.
Hardtail mtn for those times when it doesn't.
Full suspension XC for blasting head on in the dirt.
Full suspension AM for those times that are a little bit rougher.
Old school and too big Trek road bike that has sentimental meaning.
Road bike because I'm trying to be cool.

I have four

My Ti is my primary road bike
My Cannondale was my primary, and was too stiff for long rides. I don't ride this anymore.
My bent ... well, I really haven't taken it out too much. I bought it from my brother, just so I could ride something different.
My pink diamond back road bike is at my dad's place in LA, for when I go down there, and too lazy to drive there.

Just my hybrid!

Although I suspect at some point I might be talked into getting a proper road bike. In which case I'll probably convert the hybrid into a touring bike.

3 - but only one sees regular use. I have an old Trek 1000 from the 1980's - it still rides pretty nicely, and I use it if my regular bike is out of commission for any reason. I also have a Giant Iguana mountain bike from the early 90's that almost never gets used (the chain is rusty!). My regular bike is a Kestrel Talon that is on its second frame....

I have six. Why? Because I don't have room for more!

My numbers go up and down regularly but currently I have:

3 road (main, backup, steel)
- ride one, have another in case primary is down for maintenance, steelie has sentimental value
1 cyclocross, sees use mainly around CX season.
1 full-suspension MTB, 5" travel cheapie Iron Horse Warrior that sees occasional use
1 fixed gear, primary commuter
1 fixed gear, rain commuter that fits full fenders (being built)

I have three bikes, one each for road, mountain, and tandem. That covers all the bases and minimizes the storage space required.

Hmm, let's see I have
- main road bike
- backup road bike
- fixed gear road bike for training
- track bike
- bmx bike that hasn't been used in years

My wife has:
- main road bike
- commuter road bike
- mountain bike

so we have 8 all told in the house. Not so bad, is it? :)

Six.

1) Race bike (CF, Dura Ace, yada yada yada)
2) Tri bike (alumninum, aerobars, etc.)
3) Neo-retro Italian beauty (Columbus + Campagnolo = delicious ride)
4) Dutch racer (I'm going to do this one up in period-correct parts, but right now it's set up as a fixed gear for fun).
5) Beater/Beast of Burden (POS mountain bike)
6) Wisconsin steel (had been my FG commuter but I'm going to throw an old Ultegra group on it and make it the utility bike and get rid of the mountain bike).

plus, I'm planning on the Rob Roy group buy (that'll be my main commuter).

Two:
Commuter: (used to be my Roadie) steel frame with lights, rack, etc. Designed to get there with what I need to carry, adn cope with some of the lousy roads around here.
Roadie: Alloy and CF, light and minimal (except for multiple bottle cages) for recreation, or long (supported) rides.

Currently in working order: 3 road bikes

Ritchey Road Logic with 8 speed Dura Ace, because it was my first REALLY GOOD bike, and because it still works so well, even if I can't get new cassettes for it.

Bianchi 928 Veloce, because I can't get new cassettes for the Ritchey, and I needed lower gears to climb than I used to - it's got a compact.

Battaglin lugged MAX steel with Chorus, because I always wanted a MAX bike, and I always wanted a Chorus or Record equipped bike, and I wanted to see how easily/cheaply I could build up an old frame. The answer - easy, but not cheap!

I keep all three lubed and ready to go so I can decide which one I feel like rding that day.

Not currently functioning: 1 road bike and 1 hybrid.

Cannondale 3.0 series R500, with multiple upgrades, because it was my first road bike as an adult

Cannondale H400 Hybrid, because it was my first bike as an adult

They're not functional, because I scavenged bits for other bikes, and because my other bikes are so much better.

If you'll settle for less than Dura Ace, Universal Cycles still stocks a lot of eight-speed cassettes (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/index.php?category=42).
