For those of you who ride around Montgomery and Grimes counties in Texas, you are probably familiar with a little town called Richards, located on highway 149. Very recently, some roadwork left loose gravel covering the curve coming into town from the East side. My daughter and I rode into town this morning. As we approached the curve going about 10-12 mph, she called out "gravel" to warn me. It was virtually invisible and unexpected, as the road surface is asphalt. A few seconds later, her bike went out from under her and she crashed into the pavement, getting a horrible gouging road rash on her right forearm.

The man who owns the little house at this intersection graciously brought out towels and ice to soothe her forearm, while some of our fellow riders volunteered to ride back and pick up her SUV in Montgomery where we started our ride.

Over the next hour and a half we sat in this little house staring out at the intersection and watched groups of motorcyclists go through this curve, some of them temporarily losing control. Unbelievably, we saw one motorcyclist go down about every 20 minutes, tearing up their bikes and their clothes. We finally stood out on the road and waved frantically at each passing group to warn them of the danger. Every cyclist that went down was totally bewildered. They all said they ride this route frequently and had never had trouble before. We called the sheriff's department and the operator said "that's a TXDOT problem and we have left a message for them. They don't work on the weekends so nothing will be done until Monday".

The map below shows the curve with the problem. Be careful!!!!

Sorry to hear your daughter went down. Hopefully that stretch of road will get cleaned up soon.
