I'm 5'5". I have a small, 16" frame. It all depends on what frame feels right for you.

I assume by medium you mean the 17"...Kona makes bikes in 13,15,17 and 19 inch in the typical bikes. Which are you calling a medium. It depends on your personal fit and how you ride. I ride a small fitting frame with a 19" (6'5) and sometimes even wish I was riding the 17".

Try and ride it :)

I'd go for the smaller frame, either 15 or 16 rather than 17. Unless this bike has a short top tube, a smaller frame might give you better handling and quicker acceleration. I'm 5'8" and I use a 16.5" from Trek .... even though a 17.5" or even 18.5" will probably fit me better. Mine has a longer frame geometry though, so all I got to do is extend the seatpost and a longer stem. My measurements are taken center of BB to center of toptube intersection w/ seatstays.

Longer frame if you're going to be doing a lot of climbing. Smaller if you want to flick it around.

Better to err on the side of smaller than to be riding too big a frame!
