The road racing scene will conclude early September, but the Cyclocross season is getting started this coming weekend and usually continues through November/December. This will be my first season paying any attention to it, but from what I hear, Cyclocross around here is pretty active.

If the month ends in 'ber' and your in the PNW then it's cross time.

from the month of june through september, i can pretty much expect to ride home from work in a thunderstorm at least 3 days a week. now i'll have an entire winter of it. damnit, my shoes won't dry out until next summer.
by the way, when do the leaves change color around seattle?
thanks

Yes, you have captured Seattle's weather perfectly, except that thunderstorms are not that common (doesn't get warm enough)! Also, you need to be aware that weather reports will talk about 'sun breaks' :p .

The leaves don't really change colour, they just fall off and turn into soggy masses. The bigleaf maples are notorious for trapping unwary cyclists.

You'll see some of the maple's turn around mid-late September. Seattle is absolutely gorgeous during early fall.

there will probably be a halloween-related alleycat, too.

Bike events in Seattle in October? Yeah, with fat tires and full suspension. MTB is where it's at when the weather turns to crap! Check out BBTC.org for a ride calendar. Otherwise, check out MTBR.com and Ridemonkey.com in the regional sections for MTB rides. Besides, if you ride MTB your shoes will be caked with mud, instead of soaked in water, which dries quickly and comes off when whacked against a tree.

Nothing beats getting muddy whilst mountain biking :D . And Puget Sound provides lots of good places to get muddy ;) .

One of the nicer rides in the fall is the Ellensburg century, I don't believe it has ever rained on this ride.
It's a pretty quick hump from Seattle, bring tights, leg and arm warmers, and a wind jacket.
