I am wanting to upgrade my brakes to disc brakes on a 2006 Giant Mountain Bike. Anyone got any ideas on what type of brake and cost? Right now the brakes are the old type of clinchers and I need more stopping power.

'08 Avid BB7s on cambriabike.com for $50 each. You can get some Avid FR-5 levers to work with them for another $15-20 for the pair.

Bear in mind that your hubs, frame and fork maybe not be disc compatible. Most frames and suspension forks are disc compatible nowadays, so the most likely thing to up the cost a bit is your hubs.
