I fought a tough head wind today for nearly 20 miles. Having the tailwind home kept me going. I had a big climb (for me) to get back up to catch the tailwind, 1.4 miles with 344' of elevation gain. But when I crested the hill, no wind. It had died down to a whisper of what it was. I feel cheated, ripped off. Oh well, It could have switched giving me a head wind home too.

John Wilke, this is a ride you should do if you ever make it this far north, great scenery as it follows the Trimbelle river for several miles. River to the left, bluffs and hillside to the right.

Two quotes from other BF'ers I've read/heard about....

"The wind is your friend."

"The wind is an invisible hill."

Something I've noticed about wind and hills.....Because of thermal currents and vortices wind will create when re-directed (such as a hill, treeline, or even a paceline), the wind can and will change directions and can even create "dead" spots with no wind.....I really noticed it this year on RAIN. We had somewhat of a tailwind once we got back on Route 40 after going around Indy. But, I noticed, as I ascended the hills, I felt the wind in my face. As I crested the hills, I could feel the wind actually "circle" around and become a crosswind. When I began the descent, I felt the strong wind hitting me on the backside. I was solo at this point so it was easily discernable.

Look at the wind kind of like a guy told me about golfing...a golf course I used to be a member at in South Texas had sand traps GALORE!!! And I was always in one!!! I complained about it one day as I was fixing to hit out...and the guy I was with told me, "Look at the bright side, the good thing about hitting into trouble is you learn how to hit out of it." So...ride (into) the wind.

. . . . great scenery as it follows the Trimbelle river for several miles. River to the left, bluffs and hillside to the right.

Looks and sounds like a fine ride. Are there nearby motels/BBs you would recommend?

Sounds cool. Eventually I will. Thanks for the heads up. :)
