Southern California - Hispanic Handlebars

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Looks like someone reads "Ask A Mexican."
I did that, once! Talking about swimming in your clothes, or something like that... I'm sorry, but I laughed. Does that make me gazpacho?
I find "White Guys" a perjorative term for "Caucasian Males"....apologize.
Not until the guy in your avatar puts on some pants.
I guess so! But don't take it perjoratively. We kid because we love. Personally, I'm a Leprecano (Irish-Mexican).

So now YOU'RE saying I'm full of gazpacho, too?
And what is it with cyclists and food? I've have never eaten so much in my life as when I started riding again. Now I can't stop, or I'll quickly become under-tall.

Just this one that's online: http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=49572&d=1184311549
I've got others, but none with the most recent changes (second bottle cage, seat bag, saddle adjustments, dirt).
Thanks for asking! ;)
And no matter who you are, or what challenges life has presented to you, don't ever stop saying "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."

When people don't know others, they may see hate/fear/prejudice that simply isn't there. Do they want to? Or do they just expect it everywhere they go?
Mo's not a hater. He's a a snarky, drug-addled, neurotic, puerile, paroled, toenail-chewing, glue-sniffing BJing BFer...but he's actually a nice guy.
I'm the hater. In fact, I hate everyone and everything, including myself. No smilies from me!:p
If your question is directed to me, then, the answer circles back to a point I and others have made recently on these forums:
Not everyone who reads these posts know one another. All we have to go by are the words posted.
And I'm not assuming someone who uses "gay" in lieu of a perhaps more accurate and descriptive term (goofy? silly? OCP?) is a hater. I just assume he or she is OK with using words in a way that might not feel real good to a reader who is gay. English is such a cool and rich and deep language...why resort to vagueness, eh? Why not choose a better word? (But that is my prissy-pants hangup.)
And I do know that that particular usage is commonplace now, and considered OK by lots of people. And it apparently falls under the Terms of Use for the site, so it's not outrageous or anything. Just bugs me, is all, so I speak up about it.

Then rather than assume the worst and lob accusations at people, why not just join in on a BF ride and meet other Forumites? Perhaps if you come out and get to know everyone, you can overcome your "prissy pants hangups" (your words, not mine) and discover that for the most part, this is a fun, supportive community.

A blonde calls her boyfriend and says, "Please come over here and
help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get
it started." Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when
it's finished?" The blonde says, "According to the picture on the
box, it's a tiger."
Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets
him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the
table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box,
then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do,
we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything
resembling a tiger."
He takes her hand and says, "Second, I want you to relax. Let's have
a nice cup of tea, and then ..." He sighed .

Since I'm the one who used the word "gay" to which you're referring, I can honestly say that I intended to be oblique. I, for one, enjoy and even seek the ambiguity in words, for words have neither emotion nor malice, but for what the reader reads into them. I will, also, tend toward furthering my cause in more and more opaque ways when I'm misunderstood...It's the 'little brother' complex, I believe, wherein I will make more vague my already vague statements to further confuse people and feed their prejudice. Call it 'my quirky netsonality'.
"All we have to go by are the words posted" is incorrect. I'm not the words on the page, I am a real person sitting here. When asked a question, I'll answer it honestly and sincerely. When people assume that I am simply words on a page, I'll react (probably negatively) by building on that assumption. If anyone is willing to believe they know anyone else from what they have read online, that's just goofy, silly, and yes, OCP.
Anderson Cooper is gay. My statement that 'he would look pretty gay' on a bike was a stab at humor at which I know M.E. would giggle...if I remember correctly, I was responding to her statement directly, and not the global gay community as a whole.
Last; that statement was posted in an entirely different thread, and you re-posted it here (albeit anonymously), taken out-of-context, with your meanings attached. So 'my words' became your words, with your presuppositions. I would say that offends me, like any misquote might offend, but it doesn't, really...since I assume you to be a nice person and you wouldn't do such a thing without clarifying my meaning beforehand. ;)

I will politely disagree that all words are neutral in emotion. Words have history that colors their interpretation, no matter what the context. "Gay" is one of those words, "Jap" is another. Both have a history of being used to hurt others -- "Jap" in particular, since unlike "gay," it doesn't have an accepted use in neutral-to-positive ways. For example, you don't see Jap Studies on the curriculum, whereas you'll see Gay Studies.
Jap is an extraordinarly charged word. If Happytime has Japanese blood in her veins, that still doesn't make its use any more acceptable. Sorry, but that just isn't going to fly with me, no matter how you justify it.
"Hispanic" is widely used and accepted, and I have no opinion on it one way or the other; others have strong feelings about it, but on second thought, I shouldn't have spoken for them.
Listen. I'm not drawing any conclusions about anyone's personality or worth as a person by pointing these things out. I'm just talking about specific instances of a specific behavior that happen to bug me in this particular context (an open, public forum).
All I'm suggesting is that there are times and places for some types of comments. Some are best enjoyed between friends, privately, rather than on a public forum. There are jokes that I tell friends in private, and words I use there, that I wouldn't use here. Why? Because I don't know everyone here, and don't know that those words wouldn't unintentionally hurt someone I've never met. I'm not talking about walking on eggshells; just keeping in mind some pretty basic things that I know for a fact bug other people.
There is so much that is so funny and interesting about living in SoCal, and riding bikes, that we can joke around about without treading on toes.
merider1
08-30-07, 01:56 PM
Allez, with all do respect - humans are humans and often we use humor to diffuse stereotypes, bigotry, racism, etc. Comedians and Comediennes do it all the time, and suggesting that on a "public forum" we always think of not "treading on toes" is a lofty goal to obtain, IMO. (and let me clarify, there IS a HUGE difference between joking and being racist...a fine line, no doubt, but a difference nonetheless!)
I'm blond, have a large ass, small boobs, big nose and I'm Irish, southern, once-upon-a-time Catholic and, gasp, FEMALE. I can't tell you how many times I've been made fun of in jest directly, or read comments about all of the above that are made on this and other public forums, in public, at work, out on the town, in the company of strangers and friends, on television, on the radio...and the list goes on.
I might as well lock myself in my apartment, never log on to the computer, television, radio, cell phone, etc. and live a life of isolation so that my tender sensitivities do not get poked at by the HUMOR of others.
Now, let's get on to a perfectly PC topic, shall we...
...LESBIANS. :D
Happytime
08-30-07, 02:06 PM
Allez, if you are looking for a place where everything is PC and peaceful and no one bugs anyone else, may I respectfully suggest that perhaps SoCal BikeForums is not for you.
I don't like or agree with everyone here, but I accept SoCal-BF for its oddball collection of personalities and funny/racy banter. That's just me. Likewise, I don't spend time in Road Cycling or the Women's Forum. Again, that's just me. If I don't like it, I just leave and find somewhere I do like, and not waste my time railing against what an established community of friends finds acceptable or permissable.
If things get out of line, the SoCal community generally bands together and diffuses things with derision and mockery. Other times, everyone just ignores it (trolls just want attention... why feed them?). If thinsg get especially bad, mods Voltie and Jschen step in, but they are a part of, and very cognizant of what this specific community will tolerate.
Now... what was that about Lesbians?
I'm a lesbian, trapped in a man's body.

Maybe we should compare hispanic handlebars with asian handlebars, or perhaps afro-american handlebars ?
Maybe we could compare them to anglo handlebars ?
I wonder what those look like ?
I know better and should stay away fromt his thread but something a while ago occured and still bothers me and indicates to me sometimes how cliquish the SoCal forum has become.
No disrepect to anyone I am just relaying the facts. Some time ago there was a post about a man who while riding his WalMart bike was hit and killed by a car. I made a comment that it's shame people will think bicyclist, ie people who ride for sport as opposed to folks who ride bcause they have no other transportation, were being foolish and riding in the dark, against traffic with no lights. I was totally jumped on my not one person but several for making an apparently rascist statement. I had in no way made any disparagements against the rider. I was just making an observation.
Along comes this thread about "Hispanic handlebars" and all the resulting jokes, banter and what I do believe to be rascist comments. Personally I can care as I take none of this personally but the point is everyone should be treated the same. It's not OK for one person to say something rascist because they are your friend and another gets nailed because you don't know or like them.
I have to agree to Allez about knowing your audience and maybe somethings are better left for private conversations.
Just saying... BTW I am a JAP and proud of it!

Pam, I remember that thread and I commented all of once or twice in it I think and then stopped posting in it all together. But I didn't find your comments racist and I suspect others didn't as well. Those who DID, well, they just did, my dear. Doesn't change your opinon, now does it? Nor did it stop you from continuing to state your opinon as I recall.
What annoys the hell out of me, is how SERIOUSLY so many people take some of the random posts on here. It's an INTERNET FORUM. If you want to state your views, by all means. If you want to debate, by all means. But when a member starts calling others racist because of jokes or the use of, gasp, words like "HISPANIC" (which I wasn't aware was so un PC these days), perhaps he/she should go look into joining a forum that is more conservative.
As for So Cal - some days one member on here may get all bent out of shape about something, and on another day, a different person will get bent out of shape. But because most of us have ridden together and somewhat like one another - what you call "clique-ish"- we generally can work past it and continue to ride with one another.
For crying out loud, if there are folks being offended, then by all means, please leave us awful racist pig morons and go find a group you are less offended by.

Allez, if you are looking for a place where everything is PC and peaceful and no one bugs anyone else, may I respectfully suggest that perhaps SoCal BikeForums is not for you.
I don't recall writing anything like that -- can you point out where I did, please?
If not, then I'd suggest that you are doing the very thing others have suggested applies to me: that I am making large assumptions about people I don't know based on limited info. Which I'm not. I'm just pointing out a few instances of language that I and others don't like.
I'm not a big fan of groupthink, and I don't think any one person here speaks for the group. I'm not the only one who is bothered by those terms; I and those other folks are part of the online community here now.
If this type of criticism isn't comfortable for anyone in the group, my suggestion would be for them to create their own private message board where they can dictate who posts and what is posted.
Of course, I could do the same! But I get a lot of useful regional info out of the SoCal forums. Again, keep in mind, there are folks who come here just for info and entertainment, not necessarily to join on group rides. There are reasons I haven't gone on a BikeFo ride to date, but those reasons are no one's else's business. At some point, I'll post a ride, and all will be welcome.
Now you're pissing me off. I DEMAND that you stop picking on YOURSELF. You are not old and fat, Pam. Or are you saying that ALL women who Mountain Bike over the age of 45 are old????? I am the first one to say I am old and fat... not saying anyone else is but I do take responsiblity for myself and the shape I am in but wish I weren't. Just because I ride road or mountain, doesn't mean I am young or slim or young. I went out last night with a couple in their 80's. I want to be riding when I'm that age as well but trust me, they are old! It was hard to go that slow! And I am proud to say I post on the Clyde and Athena thread as well as the over 50+.
ME - I appreciate your positive and encouraging posts but if I can't laugh at myself how can I appreciate others taking a good joke at my expense! ;) I am the first to make fun of me. But I better not catch the rest of you doing it or I'll sit on you! :p
I am trying to be funny... maybe I've missed the mark...
BTW taking this PC thing too far... I noticed another thread is "Who ate Hispanic food last night?"
OK I like Mexican food and eat Mexican food (emphasis definitely added) maybe 2 times a week but I'm not certain if I have ever gone to a Hispanic restaurant which I 'm assuming can mean Mexican, El Salvadorean,Columbian, Peruvian whatever. There is nothing wrong in saying Mexican food. Mexican food is awesome and the people who make it are proud of their dishes. I bet they would slap one of us upside our heads if we called it Hispanic food.
I am proud of my heritage as well and wouldn't think of calling a restaurant Asian as opposed to Japanese. Boy is there a big different in Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc food.
We need to stop with the PC stuff. It's really getting out of hand. (did I say that already?!)
