I see a lot of hispanics on really cool old school road bikes all over So. Cal. One thing puzzles me though and I have to ask. What is with flipping the drop bars 90 degrees?

If you flip them 90 degrees, they're no longer drop bars. :D

Flipping up the drop bars been done since the 60's. Some people just like a more upright riding position without giving up the speed of a road bike. Plus they get the leverage to jump curbs and whatnot...makes it easier to talk to the chicks too and keep your balance at ultra slow speeds...lol...without having to buy or make new handlebars.

Seen some nice custom or rebent dropbars with the drop bends flared out 30° to 45° for a natural handshake grip instead of the usual straight up and down dropbars. For some traditionalists, they may not like the "flared out" look, but the riders say it's more comfy over long distances if you are in the drops a lot. It doesn't seem to be that much wider when you get up close and look at it.

nothing jumps like the "sledge hammer".

As for turning the drops 90 degrees, wasn't that done in QuickSilver too?

It's early and I have movies on the mind.

It's so they can hang shopping bags off them. Also, so that when they're bringing their hombres borrachos back from la discoteque o el garaje del otros amigos borrachos, they can sit on the bars and wedge their ass in between los drops.

Unity in cyclism. I just hold up the mirror, babe.

I think the bikes are already set up like that when they stole them.

I'm not racist. I hate everyone. :p

On a semi-more serious note, the Home Depot in Temple City/Rosemead off of Lower Azusa has got a good system going on. You know how there is usually a large congregant of Hispanic workers looking for construction work at Home Depot? Well, at this one, they roped off a section of the parking lot, have the EZ-UPs going on with picnic tables underneath, a statue of some holy figure (Virgin Mary?) up for blessing/prayer/etc., a grill to fire up the carne asada, I presume, and porta potties. Figured that if they were going to be there, might as well make it more presentable and offer them a few comfort/necessity items, presumably also to preserve good relations with the store's neighbors.

Ok, back on topic - I've seen them quite often in this part of town as well -perhaps they set them up because they use the bikes primarily for transportation to and from work/errands/etc., and as that is the primary mode of transportation, comfort/ease of use is of priority over aerodynamics.

It was for comfort. Back in the 70's, I used to have mine turned up but then I only rode it to the beach and back. Before beach crusiers and mountian bikes. WOW am I that old?

Ask a question that has to do with a culturally unique (at least in my area) adaptation to a road bike and you're a racist...are you missing a couple chromosomes or something?

Hey Beanz,

It was great. The family was over on Sunday. My excuse for missing the GRM ride. They wouldn't have been happy if I missed it or was late for the party. You know how non-riding family members can be.

The actual day was Monday. I ride a mile per year on my birthday. So, after finishing the ride and looking at my odometer I guess I'm only 36 this year, damn I look old for 36. Every mile seemed to be a struggle. Too many beers the night before I guess. I would have been better off laying on the beach.

It works both ways you know. Last year i went over and was 52. maybe that is why I didn't get as much riding in as the year before.

A true puzzlement!

Though not as puzzling to me as the chubby gabachos on the zillion-peso ultra-light road bikes I see huffing up PCH near Malibu. What is with the gordos and their 20-pound gunts, rolling the light bikes?

Loco.

Isn't "gabachos" a perjorative term for white guys? Do you really want to go there?

Allez Oops
08-28-07, 11:52 PM
I would suggest that some of the earlier responses in this thread could be read as pejorative toward "Hispanics" (a term which in itself is viewed by some as being pejorative -- e.g., people with no Spanish bloodlines who are lumped under that category).

Yes, I'll go there. :)

...off to Del Taco.

But at least I had the discretion to edit out the part about "Lyrca-clad jotos," since I was the one ragging on people bagging on gays elsewhere.

Except that, from what I remember, nobody was bagging on gays.

efficiency, here is what I was referencing:

Poster #1: "Now I just daydream about what Brian Williams, Anderson Cooper or Fareed Zakaria would look like clad in lycra, sitting atop a Cervelo Soloist or an Orbea Orca."

Poster #2: "I imagine that they would all look pretty gay."

Is there not some sneering going on there?

Mo'Phat
08-29-07, 07:06 AM
Hey, I was Poster #2! I'm Feamus.

I don't sneer. I put it plain as day, with a smile on my face and sarcasm on my tongue. For the record, just so's you know my train of thought: Anderson Cooper is gay...clad in lycra and sitting on an Orbea, he would look pretty gay. Not ugly gay.

No sneering. Not me. Snorking or snarking, maybe...but not sneering.

When people don't know others, they may see hate/fear/prejudice that simply isn't there. Do they want to? Or do they just expect it everywhere they go?

Mo's not a hater. He's a a snarky, drug-addled, neurotic, puerile, paroled, toenail-chewing, glue-sniffing BJing BFer...but he's actually a nice guy.

I'm the hater. In fact, I hate everyone and everything, including myself. No smilies from me!:p

...you forgot 'ugly', 'lazy', and 'disrespectful.'

Allez Oops: My apoligies to you if you thought I was either gay-bashing or a racist. Methinks that if those tendencies were prevalent in my postings here, I wouldn't be here as long as I have...and model citizens like Happytime wouldn't be vouching for me.

Working here in El Monte and from my experience from talking to a lot of the client population I see here, the "pc" (if you will) term would be Latino(a), but I've asked several of them specifically and none of them would be offended if they were called "Hispanic." However, it's a different story if you, say, call person from El Salvador "Mexican" :o

In the same manner, most Spanish speaking people refer to most all Asians as "Chinos" and do not generally distinguish the difference among Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc...
