I'm trying to replace my 42T chainring with a 39. I have Shimano 600 components which were pretty decent back in 99/00. Now I see a lot of "9 speed" stuff and really don't know what it's for (haven't stayed up on advances). Are these for 9 gear cassettes?

Anyway, I digress. Will 9-speed chainrings work on my 600 components? For example, can I swap out my 600 42T with a "Campagnolo 39t chainring 135 bcd 9 speed"? I don't see why not as long as the bolts line up, right?

Teach me. I'm glad to know the advances and what I need to do. I'm hoping to avoid an entirely new crankset.

PS If it helps, I have a Trek 2000...

.. Ya can't use a Campy 135BCD ring on a shimano 130 BCD crank. www.exelsports and nashbar have inexpensive 39 rings in 130 BCD. That's all you need,so save some coin.

The 600 was a model type --like 105 or Ultegra or any other kind. The 600's were at least 20 years ago (I think). The 130 is the bolt hole pattern of the chainrings. This is the number you use to buy replacements/

With a road-standard 130mm BCD, you can readily find a wide selection of replacement rings, as small as 38T, if you are so inclined.

Check ebay for bargains and your LBS if you need it right away. The thing about the 9sp stuff is that the chain is narrower and so the gauge of the chainrings is reduced. This means that a 9sp chinring will work for you but don't buy a 9sp chain to go with it cuz the links will be to narrow for your old cassette. Ideally you should get a ring to match your system. As stated above a Campy ring will definitely not fit.
