"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - The You Didn't Disappoint Bongo Moment of the Year

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You are all familar with my favorite graphic that I copped from botto:

http://futility.typepad.com/futility/images/0disappointed_1.jpg

A treasured image to be sure. In keeping with that, I couldn't help but be reminded of it while watching a recent NY Mets game. Carlos Delgado, the highly paid Mets first baseman, comes to bat with the bases loaded, mired in an unmitigated horrific slump. He had been getting booed lately @ Shea. But this time, the man any Mets fan would LEAST want to come up in a pressure situation of late got a boost from the crowd. He did not get booed that time.

The gave Carlos a standing O as he stepped to the plate. This was very surprising, but there it was. The crowd saying 'we still love you Carlos no matter how bad you've sucked recently'. It was awesome. A pitch or two later **CRACK** he slaps a key two RBI single, breaking an 0-17 hitless stretch. The most anti-Disappoint Bongo moment of the year so far. What does this have to do with road bike racing?

Who cares? And if you think all sports besides cycling suck, you are:

1.) Incorrect

2.) In the right place

The Bad Guys Won was my second favorite sports book after 'Lance's War'. Outstanding read.

I do have the autographed picture of this on my wall, along with my ticket stubs from the game (I was there with my Dad):

Recursive is quite reminiscent of that little tattletale that would always rat you and your pals out to Mom whenever you did anything 'bad' as a kid.

We should move him to the Whiner Section and report him to the Road Nazis.

foo RULES. But I have no time for this. I have to get a rare 30 mile post-pcad workday ride in (I typically ride in the AM) and prepare for the Mets vs. Phillies game on TV tonight.

That's what I was going for. The "Mods!" at the end was supposed to evoke exactly that. I'm glad my work is appreciated.

This thread's primary purpose was to flush out all the anti-foo whiners.

Mission accomplished. Now shut up and ride your bikes. In the meantime, all you Sox fans should return to the Red Sox Nation. The next time you attempt to enter the US proper, we will require passports.

Arguments about baseball make me happy that I grew up in Pittsburgh, where we don't have a professional team to get worked up about.

Yeah, if I never have to watch another baseball game, it will be too soon. It's not as bad to play as it is to watch, but it's close.

We USED to have a professional team to cheer about until that candy-armed jerk-off steriod junky left fielder couldnt throw out Sid Bream, who made Bill Buckner look fast yet scored from SECOND BASE, on a hard hit ground ball to deep short. That was the end of the Pirates as a professional franchise and the end of baseball for MDcatV.

Plus it's boring as *****.

You're right. Hundreds of millions of fans the world over for 100+ years must all be insane. Perhaps they could discover a rational sport, like, for example, CYCLING.

The weenie factor here is incalculable. How the did I get into this sport? And now I'm hooked. F me.

I will never forget that play. I was standing in my bedroom watching the tv, my wife was half asleep. I woke her up with all my yelling and cussing. I could not believe it. Sid was soooooooo sllllooooooowwww and we couldn't throw him out. Unbelievable. That was the end of the Pirates. I still root for them, but it's not the same anymore.

Much like the Mets @ Philly this week. Go Phils!!!!

The problem with baseball is that there are too damn many teams, not enough good pitchers. It's a good game when there are two quality teams playing a meaningful game but that happens all too infrequently.

After the Metsies' dismal outing in Philadelphia this week, I have to concur. Do they sell bullpens on eBay?

Instead of a pennant race, the Mets should be conducting a September Mop Up Operation. Oh well. At least the games will be interesting for the next few weeks. But if the Mets don't figure out how to get people out after their starting pitcher gets pulled for a pinch hitter, they will be playing golf in October.

I stopped caring about baseball when it cost my family close to $100 to see a game at Fenway. That was 20 years ago!

The Phillies chasing the Mets I can handle. When it's the Braves, I try, I really DO try, but I find myself daydreaming the Braves team plane crashes into Yankee Stadium during home team batting practice.

$100 for a family to go to Fenway? Today the gas, parking, hot dogs, ice cream and soda @ Shea amount to more than that. The tickets are extra. Just wait till their new billion dollar stadium is ready. Paul LoDuca bobbleheads will cost $89.

Back in April there was the hope that year 15 for the Marlins would be a reprise of years 5 and 10. Phoenix rising every 5 years and so on.........

NO, just no. The cycle is over.

Btw I live just a few miles from the St. Lucie Mets (3A affiliate). I don't have much use for the Major League team but Thurs. night is the ticket for the minor league show. ~5$ for a seat and 1$ beer and dogs. A guy even gave my 5 year old daughter a foul ball. That's fair entertainment value.

Btw watched Pedro in his "rehab" a couple of weeks ago. There are 3 guys in the Tigers organization who will be able to tell their grandkids someday about "taking Pedro deep."
