(Moderators, please don't move this. I think I'll get the best answers in this forum)

I want to change out my 42T chainring for a 39. As I look online I see a lot of "9 speed" chainrings but I have an older roadie that uses 7-speed Shimano 600 components (99/00 Trek 2000). Will the 9-speed chainrings work? I really don't want to order a new chainring and find out it's a bust. Any experience, wisdom, explanations of new technology are welcome and needed :)

PS If you have an older 5 bolt 39T chainring that's in good shape that would fit my components, I might be willing to make an offer :)

Most any LBS should have 130 BCD 38 or 39 Shimano or generic chainrings in stock to fit your Shimano 600 series. These rings are compatible whether you're running a 6, 7, or 8 speed Shimano groupo......doesn't matter. You might be able to pick one up on ebay for just a few bucks. I've seen rings sell for a couple bucks....
