Howdy,

I’m from Gig Harbor, Washington, have lived on a sailboat for more than 17 years and always had folding bikes to get around wherever we’d anchor or tie up. Our long distance voyaging days are over now, (just turned 60) and I was looking for a way to get in shape.

Our folders are 26” Dahon mountain bikes. They’re not great every day bikes but they’re good boat bikes.

I had been riding mine to my part-time job every summer but it’s just a short ride. Now, this past month of August I’ve started riding the pavement a little more seriously. I’m now doing 15 to 35 miles a ride, 3-4 time a week, averaging 12+, slowly building up my endurance.

I’m thinking about doing the Seattle to Portland (STP) next July. I know I need to ride a lot of miles between now and then. I think I also need a different bike, at least something without big fat knobby tires.

Two years ago we bought a small condo in Mexico and are now living there October through mid-May. So my winter training rides will be down there. The weather is great, but the roads are a bit scary; often no shoulders and sometimes cobblestone. I’ll probably buy an inexpensive mountain bike down there for that reason and also because there are some trails to ride. But when I get back in May I will be looking for something to do the STP and possibly other long rides as well, probably a road or sport bike with a triple.

I look forward to receiving advice from the forum and perhaps letting you know what it’s like riding the roads of Mexico.

Hello Oroluk Lagoon, it's not that you NEED to have slicker tyres for STP--but it helps :) .

Welcome to BF, and don't forget to check into the Pacific Northwest Regional forum!

Thanks, East Hill. Took your suggestion and checked out the PNW region and found a good thread on the STP.

One of these you may even see me there! I still haven't managed it--that's too popular a time for my co-workers to schedule their holidays ( : .

One of these days, though :) .

If not the STP, do you go on any other long rides, organized or not?

Did the Tour de Pierce, and will be doing the Headwaters Century in September. I try and work in at least one 50 mile or so ride every weekend.
