hey, everybody! I wanted to share some information about two upcoming skills clinics I'll be coaching.
September 22/23 -- Girls Got Skills -- this is a two-day clinic for women. we cover tons of individual bike handling skills, helping you become safe and confident on your bike, including starting, stopping, emergency stops, bumping, bunny hops, track stands, high-speed cornering and also climbing and descending. we also cover group riding skills and we've got bonus lectures on nutrition and heart rate based training. we even perform a heart-rate test so you can establish your own heart rate training zones.
October 14 -- Ultimate Cycling Skills Clinic (co-ed) -- this one-day clinic is for women and men, and was developed specifically for those riders who want to focus on skills and forget the fluff (did I just say that?). we cover all the same great skills as our two-day clinic -- we just cut out the lectures and heart-rate testing.
Both of these clinics will most likely sell out, so if you're interested in participating I would encourage you to register soon! Due to winter weather, we won't offer any more clinics until March 2008, however private skills instruction and coached workouts are available throughout the fall and winter months.

Wow, sounds pretty cool!
Can you give some examples of the types of skills you'll be teaching? I didn't see any summary/detail in the link.
Thanks!

Actually that's what I was thinking. And where is this going to be held at?

What's "bumping"?

Siu, I just sent an email to velogirls asking about it for us. :)
What's "bumping"?
Isn't that what they do in NASCAR? "If ya ain't bumpin', ya ain't drivin'!"
or "If ya ain't first, yer last!" - Reese and Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights

If you're riding in a tight pack, sometimes you may inadvertently get too close to the rider next to you. Learning to safely bump him/her and get back into place safely is a critical skill in tight packs.

hi everybody! sorry for the delayed response. Wednesday is my weekend (long ride day) and I was out on the bike all day.
first, the clinics is held in Redwood Shores (just off 101) and we meet from 9:00am to 5:00pm. lunch is included in the registration fee, as are drinks, bars, and gels.
for individual bike handling skills, we start at the beginning with some very basic skills (starting, stopping, emergency stops). we then work on balance skills (track stands, "the look," and riding with no hands). we also cover bunny hops (yes, on the road bikes). then we progress to steering and counter-steering (two very different but equally important skills). and we finish off with some games to help you apply the skills (bike death aka last bike standing, limbo, etc).
for group skills, we work on bumping (taking contact with another rider). btw, this skill is invaluable even if you don't ride in packs -- try it next time you get cut off by a car turning in front of you. we then work on drafting and pacelines (including a variety of different types of pacelines to fit different riding situations).
and depending on the interest of he group, we finish up with climbing and descending skills.
it's a jam-packed day.
we've been coaching these clinics since 2002 and we've had participants come in from all parts of the country (including HI) and Canada. our participants range from newer riders to folks who've been on the bike for decades, recreational riders and racers -- I guarantee that even the old dogs will learn some new tricks! and did I mention that we have lots of fun?
if you've got any other questions, please don't hesitate to email me or post to the forum.

I was kind of a wallflower, bench warmer, nerd... i.e. I didn't/don't dance.
If I did, I'd try some kind of ballroom dancing though.

I think the form says to deduct $20 if you register before the deadline. So if you register before the deadline it's $120.
With everything you learn and food/drink included it's actually a pretty good deal! I may see if I can sign up since I lack most of these skillz!
Henry, I'm with you... no dance skillz whatsoever here... although I did see that there's free swing dance lessons in GGPark every Sunday if you and the mrs. want to try that. hehe!

yes, the clinic is $120 (one-day). the two-day women's clinic in September is $195, but there are only 4 spots left so if any of the women on the forum are interested, I would encourage you to register soon.
btw, we do teach some dance skills for you wildflowers -- one is called the "bump & grind" and the other is called "hula hips." and that's all I'm saying about that -- you'll just have to come experience the magic for yourself.

Hey everybody! I'm giving this a BUMP since there was so much interest. I think a few of you registered (don't know everyone's "real" names). We're about half full for the Oct 14th clinic and the early registration deadline is Monday.

My GF Carol did the Girls Got Skills clinic last weekend and really enjoyed it. She said Lorri was an awesome coach and it was totally worth it! So if anyone is on the fence about this, definitely sign up! :)

Sounds interesting...but can I really learn how to ride without my hands in one day? Should riders expect to fall and scrub some skin in this clinic?
Thanks.

Just signed up the wife and I. Looking forward to the clinic.
Hi Lorri, are the clinics ever offered closer to the south bay?

Hi all! Away in SLO for the weekend (racing a tri--ack! not riding Lighthouse).
Anyways, let's see.....
FILLMORE -- Yes, sometimes participants fall down. Usually they get right back up again. Once in a while they lose some skin. During the drills, we ride at a relatively low pace, so the chance of serious injury is very low. No one has ever died during any of my clinics! :)
OWNER -- We typically offer the clinics mid-peninsula because we were able to secure a perfect location that has all the requisites (large flat parking lots without speed bumps or parking barriers, bathrooms, low traffic roads). It was harder to find these locations than you might think. Folks from all over the country participate in our clinics, so I don't personally see a short drive from the south bay as a barrier.
ADT, thanks for the compliments! I'm glad Carol enjoyed the clinic.
MISINCREDIBLE -- can't wait to meet you!
KB5QL -- can't wait to meet you and your wife too! I think this is the first time we've had a couple register together -- I hope you'll play nice together.
