Recreational & Family - STunG by a BEE!!!

GAH!! i was about 5 miles in on my way back on my 30 mile ride the day before yesterday.. and was just riding along at my own pace when a BEE stung me just above the behind of my knee cap (lower thigh)... I dont know what the hell happened.. I just was pedaling along, and then as my left leg went up with the pedal motion i notice some kind of fluttering feeling beind my knee then an undoubtably sharp very painfull needle poking sensation, and then i start to smack the area with my hand to get whatever it was out of there (pretty sure it was a Bee i felt some kind of buzzing) and what a place to get it!! gaah i was soo mad you wouldn't believe it! It hurt too... so i just reved up the bike and started pedaling so fast becuase i was really mad and i had to let out the energy.. I didnt stop going becuase i didnt want to pain to settle in anymore and be stuck becusae it was too painfull to start up again.. so i just kept going.. after about 5 or 6 miles the pain started to not be as noticable or just go away i'm not really sure.. I cant really look at the sting becuase its behind my leg, but it looked pretty red.. then yesterday just looked a little slightly darker then the skin around it.. i dont feel any pain anymore so i guess its effects wore off.. But it REALLY sucks to get stung after only going out so many times.. I have to wonder what my chances are going to be of being stung again.. I hate bee's more now than ever.

I had a close call last Saturday with a yellow jacket. I was riding along next to some trees and felt something hit my head through a helmet vent. I thought a leaf or twig had fallen on my. I poked a finger around and didn't feel anything.

About 2 or 3 minutes later, I felt a tingling sensation on my head and thought there was some sweat running along. But it kept up. So I stopped, took off my helmet and there as yellow jacket inside. I shook it on the ground and stepped on the intruder.

My heart was beating a mile a minute thinking about the pain from a head shot from one of these little critters.

Oh its excrutiating! its like poking a needle in then wiggling it around and keeping it there for like 20 to 30 minutes.. the pain would NOT go away.. i think bee's graze off my arm and stuff all the time, but this little punk managed to SOMEHOW get stuck behind my leg, my suspicion is he got caught on my shorts (I dont wear spandix biker shorts i wear shorts with pokets for my cellphone/wallet ect).. I have no idea what kind of bee it was.. but regardless i'm still a bit hestitant to go out again simply becuase i HATE bee's so much :) Tho the show will go on :) so i'll be out there soon again! (gonna see if i can do 30 miles every other day soon, maybe i'll finally loose some weight).

I was not so lucky the last time I got stung by a bee. The airflow of my helmet deposited it on the base of my neck where it promptly stung me. The pain wasn't excrutiating but it did... well... sting. At least it wasn't a yellow jacket. Many years ago, I got stung on the inside of my mouth. That one really hurt. :mad:

I got stung on the neck by a bee, in heavy traffic. Managed to bail out onto the curb, but its was really scary.
Ive had unidentified insects trapped in my helmet. On one occasion I just unclipped my helmet and threw it off to let the wee beastie escape.

Heheh ahh another plus of riding helmetless :) But he still got me in the leg! i'm trying to think of the odds.. here i've only been out about 8 or 9 times now.. and i've been stung once.. thats a 1:8 ratio! thats pretty darn good odds of getting stung! it should be more like 1:10000 or something!!! gaaah i really hate bee's!!

You just put words to one of my greatest fears.

A few weeks ago I was riding to work and something fast and winged brushed across my slightly parted lips. My first thought was of a yellow-jacket. I got lit up by one of those aggressive little barbed bullets at work three years ago and I'll not soon forget it. It's like a cross between a cigarette burn and an electric shock.

Unlike bees (yellow-jackets are wasps), they can sting repeatedly which makes it doubly ugly if you get one trapped inside your clothing.

Oh man this reminds me of an incident when I was a really small child. I was at a fair and I was sitting on the alluminum bleachers with my dad and I accidently kicked a red headed hornets nest. The hive preceded to come out and sting me repeatedly. I up and fell of the top of the bleachers and had to go home. Over 30 stings in all. Good thing I wasn't allergic I coulnd't have weighed more than 70 pounds.

I'm not sure what kind of bee it was, like i said i was riding, so the second i felt something buzing i instantly reached down and started swatting around with my hand.. i was only stung once to my knoweldge, so he's either dead on the road, or still flying around telling his buddies how he stung some chump on a bike!

I got stung last year along a busy city street. A bee flew into one of my front helmet vents - I saw it coming, but I was going too fast to get out of the way. The bee stung me on the forehead right below the hairline. I stopped as quick as I could and ripped off my helmet and started rubbing my hair as fast as I could. You should have seen the looks I got from the passing cars. A cyclist coming the other way starred at me - I just pointed to my helmet and yelled "BEE!" He just laughed and said "I know!" The real funny part was explaining the red mark on my forehead to all my friends and co-workers. They all got a charge out of it. :D

I had a very embarassing close call one morning a couple of weeks ago. I was heading back to my office to clean up and a bug hit my arm and bounced into my halter/jersey. I looked down and it was the biggest bee I had seen in a long time. I start screaming and swatting at my shirt. I still haven't figured out how I managed not to fall.

I can laugh about it now, but for a while there every time I heard buzzing I ducked.:p

So how did you get it out? You didn't pull a "Girls Gone Wild" imitation did you? :D

I once had a wasp fly into my jersey at the neck while I was riding in heavy traffic in Warrensburg, MO. I had to pound it to death inside my shirt while trying to get off the road! Now, I don't unzip unless its really, really hot.

No the top did not come off, it ended up crawling up to the edge and I flicked it of me. This will sound crude but i didn't want to stung on the boob.

My wife got bitten by one of those nastier spiders there once. I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant experience. The venom gets absorbed pretty deeply in the fatty tissue.

YIkes! well i went out again a day ago, didnt get stung by a bee, but got caught in the beginng of a thunder storm (we dont have much of those here in washington).. what really sucked was walking the bike up the way huge 2 steep hills after riding 30 miles.. no more of that.. I just ordered a MoJoe to attach to my honda and drive it to the trail from now on :) good thing the rain didnt ruin my headphones or cd/mp3 player! :) no bee's that day! they dont seem to like the rain!

Hmmm... where were you riding? I was out too and although the sky was looking a tad ominous, nothing developed. I did however get stuck in a nasty thunderstorm two days ago. And after this dry weather we've been having the lightning concerned me because I was worried about going home to a burning house since I live right next to a lot of forest land and my lawn looks more burnt out than Ozzy Osborne.

I live in kirkland, but i was on the sammish trail.. (i get off in woodinville) as i was coming home it got rainyier and there was lightning and thunder pretty much most of the night..

I am usally riding from the woodinville entrance to this sign about 15 miles out then back.. 30 miles seems like pretty good excercise to me.. :) Cant wait for my MoJo Bike rike so i dont have to take it up hills no more! I hope yakima makes good bike racks good a good deal on it, 59 shipped!

I was on a fast down hill about three weeks ago and felt something hit my right forearm real hard. Glancing down, I saw a yellow jacket clinging to my arm hairs. I was really flying on a somewhat busy, narrow, two lane road and really did not feel comfortable removing one hand to knock the little critter away.

After a second or two, I could feel the dreaded biting sensation and finally was able to flick the damn thing off without crashing. Too late of course.

My arm swelled so badly it looked like a marble had been implanted under my skin, and didn't go down for over a week. It still itches in a 2 inch area around the sting mark.

About those helmet vents--I've always wanted to glue some screen inside my helmet at the vent openings to keep those gnarly little guys out. But like most other things--I never get around to it.

I got stung twice last Friday while riding so it must have been a yellow jacket. It got caught in my helmet and before I could get it off I was already violated twice by the bugger. Just felt like a needle in my head no big deal. Yea right it hurt!!!! later that night I went into a cold sweat and got dizzy but it passed after a couple minutes so not sure if it was related. Never had it happen before or after.

I found that out the hard way just recently. I was biking along and one flew in my shorts. Four stings later I got it out. Ouch. I guess I should think about bikers shorts...

Perspiration and perfume/cologne can turn the little devils nasty, or so I've been made to understand. Paper wasps allegedly react similarly, but yellowjackets tend to be more aggressive all 'round.

Got stung yesterday. I was riding along minding my own business, right in the middle of town at a busy intersection, and a wasp landed on me and stung right through my jersey on my side. Hurt a bit at the time, but not too badly, but it's still itchy today.

What's going on here? I had never been stung untill I read this thread!:eek: Now I have been stung 3 times in less than a week. My ring finger on my left hand is still killing me and swelled from the removal of one that was working my right shoulder over yesterday morning. I guess that one thought "I'll have none of that", when I grabbed him. A little stupid on my part, but when it feels like someone is putting a cig out on me, I don't always think!:D

I've experienced t wasp stings. Both times it was on a century. The first time it was on a knuckle of my left hand. It killed the wasp (kinda messy) but left the stinger protruding from the knuckle. The second time it was just above the left knee. Both times the waso was killed by the impact but yet managed to imbed the stinger. About all I could do is continue the rides without pause.

When I first started riding seriously as a young lad I didn't want to wear the cute little shorts. Teenage insecurity at work obviously. On my way to work one day a bee flew up into my shorts and stung me WAY up on the leg.

So I'm on the ground, still clipped in, in pain, trying to kill that stupid bee....

I wear the cute little shorts all the time now.

I got nailed in the right temple by a bee on a club ride. I had to stop and take a short break. I've seen the yellow jackets eat meat around here, but only things that are dead. They are usually all around at lunch stops on organized rides. They bother people, but haven't stung anyone.

Oh my gosh , my first and only time I was ever stung by a bee, was at school , I was so mad. I was seating out side in the grass , enjoying my day, eating a borrito , when all of a sudden, I felt a niddle go through my top lip. I droped the borrito. And the first thing that came to my mind was that it must have been a bug, I remember hearing a buzz and I was so frighten I couln't bare the pain. To think that I was almost going to eat it. The pain was so bad, and it happen so fast. I know now that I am know looking out for bees and when I see one I'm terrified.

Yeah bees suck. I have been stung more times than I'd like to admit by just about every kind of bee that is native to my area. Last year these yellow jackets decided to move into my house. They came in the side of the house and made a home which was in the ceiling of my basement above a tile. I opened the tile to look and some came at me, well I put that tile back in a hurry. I thought of getting rid of them myself, but then thought better of it. I called some pros to take care of it and they said there was over 200 bees in there, so I'm glad i didnt take them on with my bee spray lol. I learned from the exterminators that the bees always go towards the light, so they turned off the lights and covered all windows except one and the bees gravitated towards that one window where outside light came through where they were dealt with. I couldn't resist joining the guys in the basement for the assault and took out many of them and took only one sting for my effort. The worst was after we were done there were a couple hundred dead bees all over the carpet in the basement and it took a long time to vacuum them all up. I wore shoes for some time later down there becuase it would suck to step on one and be stung by a dead bee that I missed when vacuuming.

Just last week, I had a big scare, a bee hit my eyebrow and then proceeded downward in between my eye and sunglasses... It scared the crap out of me as I ripped of the sunglasses and escaped being stung, I wasn't going super fast about 15 mph but approaching an intersection with traffic. Anyway I got to thinking what would happen if a bee stung you in the eye?

I got it once about three years ago from a nasty little thing that looked like a little yellow jacket, but it was about half the size and white instead of yellow. He got me in the earlobe, and after about 20 minutes I swear it got me high. I was happy for about 2 hours after that!

I got stung on the inside of thte thigh last Wed. Looks like two times, going 30-40 downhill on my road bike. Holly $4!t that hurt.stoped to make sure there was no stinger left. When I got home dosed up on Benadryl?sp? swelling wasn't to bad but he damb thing still itches. This was also the week I started to notice the YJ hanging around the recyclibles. It's going to be a nasty fall.
