We all have them. How do we all prepare for an actual ride? I don't mean training-wise, but all the other things ... like clothing (ahem ... shorts), supplies, drinks, energy bars, etc ... just so that you don't forget it when you need it ...

When driving to the start of a ride, I take an inventory starting with my feet and, working my way up, make sure everything is ready. Shoes, socks, leg warmers (seasonal), shorts, chamois butter (if necessary), base layer, heart-rate monitor, jersey, arm warmers, gloves, riding glasses, helmet. Then I cover the consumables: water, sports drink (Zym these days), gel, energy bars. And finally, some cash, ATM card, cell phone, bike computer, and maybe a camera. And I always double check to make sure I've put the bike's front wheel in the car.

When riding directly from home I'm a lot less organized. On Monday's ride up Mt. Hamilton and OLH I forgot the Hammer Gel which was kind of a bummer. Fortunately, our route to OLH brought us back by the house so I could grab some.

Rush and hope I didn't forget anything...

Actually I try to prepare everything the night before so I don't have to rush as much. Sometimes it works!!

LOL - spoken like a true cyclist.

Mine is generally much more disorganized than you guys - it starts with procrastinating and ends with going back in the front door 2 or 3 times for whatever I forgot.

Get up, get on bf.
Get a drink.
Get back on bf.
Get my bike.
Get back on bf.
Find stuff.
Get back on bf.
Look again for missing stuff, which usually amounts to half of what I need.
Get back on bf.
I do these jumpy things to stretch everything in my body, and crack my knuckles.
Then leave.
Get back on bf when I get home.

+1

I actually have to lay everything on top of the washer/dryer with the bike leaning next to the washer/dryer and then load 'em up for a morning ride. Afternoon rides is like ehhhhh, whatever since I can take my time.

I b1tch and moan about how tired I am, and how I should've put on more sunblock if it's hot; or worn my arm warmers if it's cold. My gf says I'm a girl 'cause I complain a lot.

Drag myself out of bed, wondering why the hell I am doing this when I could be in la la land with Engeline for another couple hours. Prepare some instant oatmeal and wash it down with some Kvac. Yummie. Stuff bunch of stuff in to my jersey, making sure not to forget my ipod, check the pressure on the tires and I am off.

I have found that it is WAY too easy for me to get distracted, and take too long getting out of the house, and on weekdays during the school year, the difference between 7:25 and 7:35 is like night and day - at 7:35, every Mom in the world is dropping her kids off at one of the six schools I pass in my first 2 miles. At 7:25, there's hardly anyone on the road. So, I consciously set up a routine, so now I barely need to think.

AND I find that knowing that I don't have to make (and wait for) coffee allows me to wake up MUCH happier!

The Night Before:
- Set up coffeemaker for 6:15
- Set alarm for 6:30

The Day Of:
- Wake up, turn off alarm
- Take out trash and get newspaper. While I'm doing that, I'm gauging the weather - Hot or cold, foggy or sunny, etc.
- Drink coffee while swimming upstream towards being fully conscious.
- Choose which of three bikes I want to ride today, put the saddle bag on it, and pump up the tires.
- Lay out riding clothes on La-Z-Boy in garage/workshop:
--shorts, jersey, and whatever extra clothes I need (vest, jacket, tights) go on the chair back.
--Socks, HRM strap and arm warmers go over the arm
--Helmet, shoes, gloves, and glasses go on the seat, along with minipump, an energy bar, keys, and the little ziploc with my license, insurance card, phone, and $5.
- Sit down and read for a few minutes in the tile-lined room (always a good idea before a ride).
- Dress (Since the garage/workshop is unheated, winter can be somewhat challenging)
- Ride, baby, ride!

I thought "Kvac" was what German ducks say.

Come on! You know you were thinking it!

I wish! That is the best kind! Once they setup the line grew pretty fast, and usually all of it was gone within an hour. I get mine from a "local" Russian Deli where I am still Molodoy Malichek, you would think I would be Molodoy chelovek by now! heh.

My Bike Slave takes care of all the equipment and loading the bike (tandem) or xingle bikes on the car. Decide on what team kits to wear - sunscreen - heart rate monitor - make sure Garmin is charged - tank up on coffee - fill water bottle - pack 1 South Beach peanut butter cereal bar - Ipod shuffle (only as a stoker - never on my single).
