as was to expect from recent price cuts on the existing models:
2 new garmins will ship shortly. they feature larger screens in color, navigation, speed, cadence heart rate etc.

more details in the linked article below:
http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/08/29/garmin.edge.605.and.705/

they fit all the requests made recently in this forum except the price maybe ($500 and $650). let's hope that similar offerings from magellan will bring some price adjustment in this segment of the market.

prices on garmin's website now are $430 and $540

SRM & Quarq compatibility for measuring power. Hopefully the Quarq isn't crazy expensive like the SRM. Hopefully they can add powertap at some point.

I'd be happy if the Edge 305 I just received as a replacement from Garmin, last longer than 1 month. That's how long the original lasted. I love these units, but man are they unreliable!

Dunno if you can make a blanket statement like that. There are lots of units out there. It is a shame if you have had issues. I for one have a 305 going strong for over 1.5 years so far.

As to the 705. I don't know if I care. I don't tend to get lost on my rides and know the roads well in my area. Maybe if I did lots of impromptu rides or travelled a lot I would care more. I am personally hoping they will be additions to the series and not replacements so that when my 305 dies I will be able to get a new cheaper 305.

We tend to hear about only the failures and the complaints, so you are probably right.

I don't care about the 705's either. Color doesn't interest me and courses and course points get me where I want to go. If I do a detour, in an unfamiliar place, I have a paper map with me.

I sure wish they would improve Training Center though. It is tooooo bare boned to be useful except for communicating with the device. I am seriously looking at paying $50 for DeLorme Topo USA

I've had my Edge 205 for almost a year and I agree, Training Center sucks. But I highly recommend SportTracks, available here: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/ It's integrated with Google maps and shows you all your training history by week/month/year, etc. And it's got a modern UI.

Regarding the new Garmins -- I don't quite see the point of mapping, especially at those prices! Almost all my rides are in areas I'm familiar with. And I think the new units are slightly larger than the Edge 205 and 305, which is moving in the wrong direction.

The 705 is closer to $700 when you throw in speed sensor, HR and maps.

So if I already have a 305, then are the sensors the same? The 305 has ANT capability. Will they abandon 305 owners and not provide a firmware upgrade for power meter use?

Also, does the Edge 705 have all the features of an eTrex? Then it might be worth it to upgrade cause I could use it for hiking and geocoding photos also.

I wonder if they will include a running odometer.
