This isn't the race report I expected to write, but then the race I had (what there was of it) was wildly different from the race I expected.

Got up on race morning @ 3:45 AM, had a bagel, cream cheese, and yogurt - my standard breakfast. I had everything laid out, with only a few bottles to fill and clothes to put on. My one pre-race mistake was forgetting to take the bottle of water and Nuun with me to the race start to drink with my gel before race start, although I tried to compensate by having a few electrolyte tablets and a few cups of water at the transition area to wash down the gel.

I felt pretty good on the swim, although the cheap waterproof watch I bought fell off between buoys 4 and 5. I was slow but in a good rhythm, having only been kicked in the face twice by some people doing the breaststroke. I rounded the second houseboat and started the long swim to shore and was feeling pretty good since I had felt only the barest twinges of cramps until that point. About halfway to shore I had 3 rounds of the most excruciating calf cramps I've ever had; each one bringing me to a halt while waiting for them to relax and watching the other swimmers go by while I swore a blue streak and tried to get the muscles to release. I eventually made it to shore and got through a slow T1 - my calves were so sore I could hardly walk.

I was really looking forward to the bike leg and was having a great ride, and even my calves felt better. I averaged 22 mph for the first 26 miles or so, at an avg HR of 145 and average power of 175 watts, which suggested a good tailwind because as good as I felt, I'm just not that fast. I thought there was a lot of traffic on route 97 but the drivers all gave us a wide berth so I didn't think more about it at the time. At an intersection in Oliver at about mile 27 or so, a car driven by a very elderly woman made a left onto southbound Rt 97 just as I was going through the same intersection heading south. Without any additional warning or signal she then made an immediate right turn into the parking lot entrance just ahead of me, cutting me off. I braked and turned sharply but not enough, and the next thing I know I hit the front right corner of her car and was flying over the hood, landing on my right shoulder and rolling onto the pavement in front of the car.

Chaos broke out and I was helped to my feet by a doctor who was spectating at that corner. The driver was distraught and in tears, apologizing profusely for having caused the accident. I still have to deal with her insurance company so we'll see how that works out. My Zipp 808 front wheel is a total loss and the front brakes don't look right, so I'll have to have the bike looked at. The RCMP and ambulance soon arrive and as the pain in my shoulder continues to grow I realize that even if I could get a new front wheel, I was done for the day. 42 weeks of training rendered irrelevant by a few seconds of random carelessness by a complete stranger - I have a hard time imagining a worse way to DNF. I got a nice ambulance ride back to the medical tent and the doctors and nurses there were wonderful (I was their first patient). The preliminary exam at the Penticton hospital showed no obviously broken bones, a separated and very painful right shoulder, and a variety of bumps, bruises and some road rash. A CAT scan here in Issaquah was clear but the possibility of a closed head wound still exists, as an examination of the helmet shows I did hit my head on the pavement after all.

I did sign up for next year, as I now have unfinished business to attend to.

**** dude, that sucks. Though look on the bright side...you can get her insurance company to get you an all new bike.....maby.

I hope you get better, and you only have 52 weeks until you get your revenge on IMC

man, I am so so so sorry.
I heard it was a rough day out there, my training partner DNFed at 13 miles into the run.

That's the saddest race report ever. Your injuries sound pretty painful and I hope you recover quickly.

Thanks, everybody, for your sympathy and best wishes. My coach works for Blue Seventy wetsuits (Marketing Director, I think) and has a few connections so he's going to try and get me into IM Florida. He also suggested emailing Graham Frasier, (the president of North American Sports, which licenses the `Ironman' brand for use in North America, including IM Florida) explain what happened and ask to buy a slot. I figure I've got nothing to lose.

Wow, that really is bad, that is alot of work to have taken away. I think you should get your race entry fee out of her as well, that's $500 down the drain.

Man sorry to hear that Chris. I hope you can get in IM Florida and use all that training.

Well after my doctor visit today, it looks like I'm just done for the year. at least 6 weeks of physical therapy ahead of me, and no swimming for about as long unless the PT says otherwise. No biking / running for a week, then ease back into it as my shoulder comfort permits. I can probably do longer rides before I can do longer runs. My Dr. thought IM Florida on 11/3 would be too much stress for my shoulder and strongly suggested against it.

That's terrible. Im so sorry.

All those long hours, early mornings, sore muscles, lack of sleep and fatigue....wasted.

I just read a newspaper article that said IMAZ 2009 is going to be in November instead of springtime (April?). That's a version of the race I would be quite happy to do with you, as I could just train all spring, summer and fall, tapering in October when the Seattle weather generally goes to hell anyway. An early spring race like IMAZ 2008 means that I would have to start training something like next month and ride all winter (or ride indoors on the computrainer) and mostly give up a ski season, none of which I'm exactly eager to do right now.

Besides, isn't IMAZ 2008 sold out?

Cheers,
Chris

Wow, that does stink! I disagree with people saying it was all for a waste though. The wheels, bike, entry fee, medical costs, etc.... those were lessons and challenges just like a triathlon is. Chris dealt with them like a mature human being. Accidents and weather happen, things out of your control come your way. He is probably in the best shape of his life, has learned what it takes to train for an IM, and other valuable experiences along the way. I figure the hammer pulled back on the Chris Esposito bullet just got pulled back further on his next IM target. I hope everything works out for you and you heal well.

i must say you have a great attitude about it considering what youve put into this.

add this to your bag of motivation and use it for next time.

You make a good point. I was talking with one of my teammates today and he said (and I agree) that for his first IM, just having gotten through training volumes and intensities he originally though impossible changed his mind about what his own limits were. In past years I've done single training weeks (at XC ski racing camps) of 20 hours and been exhausted, so if you asked me then if I (or any non-pro athlete, more generally) could get through a month of 20 hour weeks without serious injury or illness I would have said you were crazy. I did far more in training than I ever thought I could (and now know I can), and while that's not the race finish I wanted, it's a pretty valuable lesson learned to take into next season.

6-8 weeks of physical therapy start on Friday, so we'll see soon enough how the recovery goes. Thanks.

Eeh. Sorry to hear about your race. I'd be pretty pissed. But it could've been worse dude you could've gotten hurt much worse ("always look on the bright side" isn't really my forte but... it works here.)

I'm amazed that an IM event didn't have a closed (or at least, controlled) bike course.

Add me to the chorus of 'that sucks' and I hope we hear a much happier result from your next race.

This wasn't the list of excuses I expected from Chris Esposito!!! :) You can do it...we'd have a blast. I'm not sure if it's sold out but if it is, I can get you in.
