Today is a good day. My new Felt F2 http://feltracing.com/ came today and I booked a trip to stay in some castles in Ireland for 6 days(bringing my bike of course) then off to San Sebastian, Spain to cycle in the Basque country and the south of France for 7 days.

How are you handling the transportation logistics of the bike to all your locations, primarily USA to aboard, etc.?

I think I'm just buying one of those bike cases and checking it on the jet. These bikes break down to the size of a suitcase. But I have until June 1st of next year to figure it out the small details.

Well, that ain't a suitcase! :p I was curious, because I was considering that myself, then found that bikes don't fit in your standard suitcase.

I don't know what's best, exactly, but I'd prefer a hard shell case. Airline luggage handlers aren't required to actually possess ALL the normal human chromosomes as condition of employment, and often act like it.

The other thing to do is make sure you understand the luggage size requirements of your airlines, as some of the larger bike boxes are "over-sized", which is *very* expensive to bring along. A good box is expensive, but then so is a ruined trip from a broken bike. The Serfas box looks like a reasonable compromise in security and size and cost.

yes, bike shipping domestically can run around $75 each way on an airline. Haven't tried overseas (tour company has always provided my bikes when I'm traveling). But sounds like a great trip!!

I loved San Sebastian. One of my favorite spots in Spain. My wife and I bought a car and traveled around western Europe for a few months. The fools we were. We didn't even bring our bikes. I must have said I wish I had my bike a thousand times on that trip.

I would rent a bike but I know if my lazy ass had to go somewhere to pick up a bike, pay for it, and return it I would probably only ride once. But if I see my bike "MY BIKE" I know I will ride it every chance I get. I have a friend who just moved back to Spain after his father got cancer(terminal), thats why I'm going(visit a friend). Ireland is just a bonus I threw in. I might change the dates to fit in either Isle of Man TT(not racing just watching) in Ireland or Run With The Bulls( I will run).

my wife and i leave sunday for three weeks in the south of france (with our bikes of course). we got some performance team cases and they're sweet. very compact and they roll. we did it last year with just cardboard bike boxes and a lot of padding and they survived without a scratch, but the boxes were a bit unwieldy.
airfrance takes bikes for free, of course, and thats what we're on. i also know people who've avoided extra charges by claiming it's business conference/expo equipment which for some reason is exempt.
you'll love riding over there, the people for the most part really respect and embrace cycling, much more so than here.
