and $1300 AX Lightness brakes

Incorrect. I was there, and NOTHING can really top that for stupidity. The Lightweight components won't snap apart because there are too many holes in them.

What's wrong with drug jokes? Anyone who thinks drugs aren't a laughing matter hasn't heard Denis Leary's routines on the topic. Never were truer words spoken.
Very, very, very few things aren't laughing matters. Just ask botto.

Onlookers must have laughed a lot then.
I can only imagine the bemused locals kicking back on their porches watching the local criterium and placing beer wagers on the collapse of various bikes.

How do you calculate how much faster you can go for each gram less that you weigh? I ask because for us it'd do nothing. But if you were riding 2100 miles and it made a 3 minute difference, that could be worth $800+ to a pro. So...how do you calculate it?

The funny thing is to the non-cyclist we all look idiotic on how we spend money.
I guess the line where prices are outrageous for certain componants is a personal one.

i did all of the math last year after a hillclimb race (16 mile climb) and it was around 1 min per lb (of course thats the first lb, every pound is worth less and less and gets more and more expensive)
so thats .132 seconds per gram in that situation.

It would be a moot point. A pro would never ride it. Those guys count on their gear to not fail. This piece is OCP all the way.
I'm buying 2 of them today! One, so I can lighten my 21 lb bike by 60 grams, and the other I'll keep in my saddle bag just in case I need it. Might have to buy one more and wear it around my neck on a gold chain.

What's the "drillium craze" you speak of? Is it just what it sounds like: people drilling holes in components to shave weight?

I see. Is this really any different than drilled out chainrings (scroll to bottom of page)? (http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2007/news/08-28)
What the drilling more widespread to other components and even frames, or just mainly chainrings?

I can't find it now, but I remember seeing a photo on Classic Rendezvous of a Campy Super Record crankset that looked like an Irish lace doily.

Zeus 2000 components from Spain circa 1981 (Campy Record knockoffs). Chain rings came drilled out as did the rear der and the brake levers. Worked flawlessly for me from 1981 - 1991. I would have kept them for my (then) new Basso Loto but everything on the Zeus had French threading.

Yeah, weight means way less than aerodynamics, hence why I'm a fan of BTR. I don't get why people will spend absurd amounts of money to get their bikes ridiculously light, when you can spend 1/10 as much, make more bike more aero, and go way faster than the lightweight guy.

My gruppo was the black one except for some reason it came with gold anodized hubs. Had it mounted on a blue Alan frame. Light but VERY whippy. Guys I rode with in Spain really liked those Alan's and the Zeus stuff (of course it was WAY cheaper than Campy as that was before Spain joined the {then** Common Market - stuff made in Spain was really inexpensive compared to anything imported).

Indeed that is true. But I don't think speed is foremost in the minds of most WW posters. Better yet for some us is to lose body fat or simply improve our position on the bike :D

I'm curious whether there was any flex in the crankset. Any rubbing on the FD when sprinting or climbing, ?por ejemplo?

If we're talking generally about preposterous components and bike builds, the difference between a stock Cervelo Soloist Carbon and a weight weenied 9.5 pounder is around 55%, not the .26% Cervelo example.
Considering the market for these overpriced weight weenie items is comprised of non- or more average racers who have lots of money, aren't burdened by weight regulations and put out good but non national class wattage, the "tipping point" would be really low (in percent grade, probably under 3%).
