Not me...
I was busy taking pictures of a Vitus that belongs to a Hispanic friend of mine. Nice vintage bike all Campy. We were at his Hispanic bikeshop next to the Hispanic taco stand. I asked him if he had any Hispanic handlebars in stock but he didn't.

We had Hispanic food for dinner last night at our Spanish styled home. My wife is Hispanic so I'm forced to eat Spanish food at least 3 nights out the week... ...but in all honesty, I prefer to eat Japanese food....and so does my wife... :p:D

I hope you had some good Sopapilla while you were there.
After riding 32 miles in the Hollywood Hills in 100 degree heat all I could eat was diet ice tea. I guess I just rode my appetite into the ground. I have never had Hispanic food, but I like Mexican food-Don Cuco! (http://www.doncuco.com/)

Don Cuco's is not bad. I've also enjoyed Casa Vega, but more for the kitsch factor. Mexicali is only good for meeting singles, not the food.
Problem is that I like pristine restaurants and to be truly authentic, you need a little grunge in the environment.

I've had mixed results at Casa Vega, but agree that the ambiance is nice. That is, once you've managed to pick yourself up off the floor, and your eyes adjust.
Agree all around on Mexicali. The food doesn't even seem mexican... more like "typical bar food, severd (named) in the general direction of the border".
A friend of mine swears by a small, authentic place a few blocks north of Hugo's... can't remember the name now. I'll find out. edit: Tony's at Coldwater and Magnolia.

I like the Sombrero's taco shop that's wedged into the back of the local Shell station.

The one in that little alley/street behind the Westin/Thrifty Rental cars in LAX (off of Century) is the bomb diggity. When I was a flight attendant, I used to stop there at 11pm right before checking in to work the Guadalajara all-nighter. Ahh, fond memories.
On a side note, I had El Pollo Loco for lunch today in El Monte. Ahhh, two "el's in one sentence. Can't beat that!! :p
Hey alicestrong - we gotta do lunch sometime! I'm working full-time in El Monte now!

I love Los Sanchez. My wife grew up in Whittier and during the time that she lived there while we were dating, I could never convince her to eat there. I'm not sure if it was the "C" rating (C is the lowest letter grade given) or the cockroaches she saw on the floor the times she would go there with me while I got something to eat.
My father in law ate there with me once. He is rarely satisfied with anyone's Mexican food except for my mother in law's. He actually complimented the food. I haven't been able to get him to go back though.

What are you talking about? Clearly you haven't made it to any of the fine Del Taco's in your area. :p
What makes great Mexican food to you?
Here are my random ponderings which are probably all repeats from this thread.
- Finer restaurants have better quality meats and veggies, but are probably less authentic.
- Grungier places are probably more authentic, but may not have the best quality ingredients.
- I'd rate places like Casa Vega & Don Busco as being middle tier between those two options.
I personally find all three delightful. I'm just as happy at a Taco truck as I am at Don Busco as I am at one of those fancy places in Vegas that has snooty versions of Mexican. All the experiences are different, the food is often quite different, and it's all classified as Mexican.
I'm rambling, I probably shouldn't post after a long day of drinking at the beach.

Has anyone eaten at Los Pueblitos in Brea (Rose and Imperial Hwy)? My favorite Mexican restaurant. Quite authentic. Great Chili Rellenos. No one speaks English much. Alittle grungy but I choose to ignore that cause the food is so good.
Lenchita, hands down best Mexican food in the valley. It's in Pacoima, kinda in the valley.

It's a big place with booths and banquet style seating and the patrons are always almost all Hispanic......so you know the food is authentic Mexican.

The pic on the first page is Los Jarritos in Pomona! Great food and very reasonable prices.
Some dude at work mentioned Lily's (Garey and LaVerne St.) right next to the big Mariscos joint that was long ago a Pizza Hut or Shakey's. Also a place called Mary's Tacos just West of the 71 on Valley (Holt) behind the launder-O-mat. Ever been there? LIttle holes in the wall but supposedly great food.
Someone suggested La Paloma on Foothill and Garey. Didn't care for it at all. Kind of scary when you look around and you're the only Mexican in the joint. I knew at that point I was in trouble!:D

Guy in Upland is Jarritos (minus the 'LOS'). He went on his own after working for LosJ. We used to go there once ina while when he first opened. He's a tight sucker though. Trying to get extra salsa is like pulling teeth.
He decorated the place a bit more, put purty pics on his menus and jacked up the prices big time. We don't go there anymore. Food not as good and twice the price of LosJ's.:(

BTW Socalrider, have you had the pico de gallo at Los Jarrito's? They don't push it or advertise it. I saw it at another table once so I asked, They give you a small bowl but MYGOSH! It's great and one lil bowl is hot enough for the entire meal.
If the waitress Maria serves us (always hopes she does) she brings it out without asking. I order my plate and a Sope de carnitas on the side. She always has them throw some on top of the sope!YUMMMM!
