I have been riding for a lot of years but never nothing serious. My current bike is 5 year old Tred Mountain bike and has about 1000 miles on it and I have never done anything except squirt WD-40 on the chain and rear gearing. I now ride about 10 miles a day and have put 400 miles on since May 1st.

What should I be doing for routine maintenance and how often to you do it?

I would start by going to the bike shop and buying a bottle of bicycle-specific chain lube. WD40 isn't the best thing to be using on your drivetrain.
