Fifty Plus (50+) - What's your favorite riding surface?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

To honor Denver Fox's observation that there are no perfect polls and there are too few of them put up here because everybody picks them apart, I axe that burning question, what's YOUR favorite riding surface? Make note of the effort to be inclusive...

Dirt, preferably packed.

Love that dry dusty grit. When the trail gets damp the bike comes home looking like a sugar doughnut. Keeps my mechanic busy!

I ride the old chipseal road sholder everyday!

Where are all of the choices that have ice as a component? As in frozen lakes or say cobblestone with icy patches? Ice is our riding weather up to 5 months of the year.
New chipseal, especially when I'm wearing a light color jersey is pure heaven. I love the fresh tar stripe I get up the back. And cleaning the bike after the ride...what a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

Where is the choice for 1 hour old asphalt on a 110 degree day? The last legal buzz. ;)
But given the choices, mud, rocks and roots is a killer combination. :O

New Blacktop for me also. But here in Bozeman as soon as they lay down blacktop they chipseal it. Crummy *******s.

Same goes for you.:D
Old chipseal road shoulder with broken glass....and pea gravel, a rusty old nail, and an occasional coin.

Fresh blacktop also, with scattered pieces of small dog road kill.

Hey - Dumb A**, where is the "other" category?
Some people can write polls, and some can't!
:D:D:):D
I chose
"Mud, with rocks. Big sharp rocks, to cut your tires and your flesh." because mud with sharp rocks is especially suitable for a roadie bike with drop bars that used to have flat bars!

Dont worry Terrierman, no one around here would complain if your trying to do something good.....:D
Typically, this poll is flawed and does not have my favourite - where's the option for 'my comfy chair, mug of coffee and cycling vid on the tele'?

Then move, crybaby. You don't see any professors from oh, say Auburn on here complaining about riding on ice do you?
Oh, and stick with the poll choices, buster!

Take your pick. Most choices can be had in Gov Ed Taxdell's Pennsylvania.
Hey, I am going to break ranks as others have and add my choices:
1st: Smooth, new blacktop
2nd: Hard packed earth on a nice level shady trail

You also forgot to add the choice of riding on a street right after a horse parade.

Its hard to decide. Railroad crossties, a good steep hill of loose gravel, or a field of goathead spurs.
Anything but smooth, freshly-laid asphalt.
