Road Cycling - Schwinn?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey folks, yes I know Schwinn went out of business, however, just wondering if I'm I'm looking at a real deal here.
'02 Schwinn Fastback, whole drivetrain is Tiagra, hubs are Sorra, and I'm assuming rear cassette is Tiagra?
$800 Canadian or, 560 US?
I'm looking at getting on the road more as I cant seem to get out to Mountain bike as much.
Be Brutally honest if you must.

$560US is decent for a Tiagra bike, and Pacific is still selling Schwinn road bikes to dealers, so they're not orphaned and there is warranty support (if it was a bike made after the Pacific takeover).
But these were not very distinguished bikes. Look for a leftover Jamis or Giant or Fuji. Or up dere in Canadia you might find a Norco or such at a good price.

Scwinn's not out of business. They sold to Pacific and have concentrated primarily on Xmart bikes. They do build better bikes than their Xmart specials though the Xmart stigma may be hard to ignore.
Check www.schwinnbikes.com to check prices on their '03 Fastbacks. There are several variations with wide range of prices.
Supergo has the '03 model for $699 and is most 105 instead of Tiagra... Just to give you a perspective of the value of the bike.
Another point of reference. My wife has an 01 (before Pacific took over). It was (and still is) in good condition. Anyway, it is all Ultegra, CF fork, Computer, Selle Italia seat for $875.
Yet another point of reference. In the July/August So. Cal. Bicyclist, an 01 Schwinn Fastback Ltd with Dura Ace, FSA carbon Cranks, CF fork, Macic Helium wheels is selling for $1300. (US)

Yes, Schwinn still exists, but in name only. Anything made today with the Schwinn label is garbage.

With no receipt Schwinn won't warranty anything after there take over. I found out the hard way. I cracked my frame on my 01 Fastback that I paid $700 last year with all 105 components and few other goodies added in. Brand new. But I bought it friend so no receipt so no warranty. The new Fastbacks are just not the same.

Is that really true? I mean did Pacific close down all of Schwinn's production lines, get rid of all the Schwinn employees and just start rebadging crap bikes under the Schwinn name? I'm wondering because just because a company is under new parent management doesn't necessarily mean its products have changed.
Don't know if the frames are the same, but it does look like they are putting lower end components on their new bikes in places where most people don't look. Many people know to look at the drive-train, but don't look at brakes, headset, etc.
Don't most warranties only apply to the original purchaser of the product? So, if you are buying a used bike, you are on your own whether the company is in business by the original owner, has been sold to someone else, or is completely out of business.
