I don't have many details, but a guy that works with one of my good buddies was assaulted by a motorist during a road rage incident. This is like a scene I just saw on the Soprano's. Apparently the rider and motorist got into some altercation, the driver cutting off the rider serveral times.

At a stop light the motorist got out of his car, opened the trunk, pulled out a golf club and proceeded to strike the rider several times across the body and back. Passing motorists got the license plate of the local driver and the Torrance Police department has already arrested the driver (he left the scene) for felony assault.

The bike commuter made it into work but is not feeling too well. I suspect this story will be in the Daily Breeze at some point. I'll keep the list updated if I hear more.

Thats all the details I have at this point. I suggested to my buddy that the rider speak with an attorney and he needs to have some medical evaluation completed. One of the hits was near his spine.

Was the motorist Jack Nicholson? :o

Sorry not really funny but I couldn't resist...

I'm glad that August is almost over. It seems like the very worst month for road rage in LA.

Hope the cyclist is OK...

That's just crazy. I just don't get human behavior a lot of the time. I mean, the motorists life as he knows it is now over. I suppose if he's rich, he can buy his way out of it. But otherwise, he's looking at a couple of years, fines, fees, loss of job. Who knows his situation though, perhaps that sounds better than whatever life he's living.

Mostly, I just hope the cyclist is ok. He should definitely get an attorney.

Doesn't surprise me actually. "They" are out there which is why, IMO, it's best to let the motorists have the right away even when it isn't theirs (assuming this was a case of that - although it isn't revealed as to what the altercation was over in the OP). All it takes is one nut and someone gets hurt, or worse, killed. I hope the cyclist is okay and I hope he does seek legal action. No one has a right to do what that motorist did under any circumstances.

Personally, I am glad that the bicyclist was defending his rights to the road, but I am appalled at the actions of the motorist. Maybe the motorist is from the Rose Bowl area and was ticked off because his golf game was delayed by two minutes while the peloton passed???

I also hope that the motorist is seriously rich and that the bicyclist takes him to the cleaners... and then has the ba***rd thown in jail with Bubba, and hopefully Bubba is a former bicycle messenger that got put in the slammer for beating up motorists that cut him off!!!

You don't even know what happened! How was the cyclist defending his rights?

More a response to ME and not a reflection of this specific incident. I should have been more specific.

Why is it a response to me, Phil? Because I have an opinion that the motorists can just have the right away if they are determined to take it? I'm speaking for myself and that is how I choose to ride (which is why I did specify that it was "in my opinion" and that I don't know the details of this particular incident). I don't ever want to be involved in an altercation of any kind.

Which club did the guy use?

I think a driver would be too flexy, but you could get some pretty good clubhead speed.

A putter would have the stiffness and stability to maintain a good line.

I'd opt for a 5 iron...choke down a little, 3/4 swing, and let the club do all the work.

/kidding...but if the driver pulls a golf club, you pull a frame pump...if he pulls an umbrella, you pull a U-lock...that's the Torrance way.

//kidding two times.

No...I know what she means. When it comes to that, the car will always win. Why take it on?

You just gotta throw really hard and aim for the eyes.

Swinging your bike is another option though probably alot more costly.

CO2 Canisters...

No!!! You keep those! Put one in each hand to stabilize your fist and uppercut that punkass in the jaw.

Unfortunately, most of us don't ride in groups all the time as it's not practical.

That's what I was thinking - dodge his first swing and once it's past you, knock him in the jaw. Anyone dumb enough to bring a golf club to a fight will go down pretty quickly. (If he was in the trunk, why would he choose a golf club over a tire iron?)

I was riding on Palos Verdes Dr. a couple of years ago. I was descending a steep twisty part going 35 mph and using the whole lane when a Mercedes came up fast behind me. As soon as I could, I got over to let the car by. The 60 ish lady driving the car, got along side me and ran me off into a narrow dirt shoulder. No doubt she was trying to kill me. Then she speed away, before I could get a plate. I probably made her 12 seconds late for her manicure.

How much do you want to bet it will have some kind of negative spin on cyclists?

I had some goofball try to get out of his vehicle assualt me last year, with using his vehicle to try and cut me off. Unfortunately for him, I was too quick for him to even get close every time he got out of his truck as we weaved and bobbed our way through a couple of miles of suburbia. He was quite purple by the last time I dodged him, laughing and taunting him more than a second time. What he didn't know is that I was feeling very non-confrontational and the fact that when he buzzed me I could feel the wind from his side mirror on my ear could have meant me stopping and accomodating his need for a beating. Personally I'd be ashamed if a golfer caught me and was able to hit me with a club.

When they open the door to get out, and the first foot hits the ground...... stomp the door closed. It might not close, but man O man it's gonna hurt like hell if you don't break his leg. Getting out of you car to assault a cyclist .... tsk tsk.

Preface the about with.... "DO NOT get out of your car, I'm warning you, bad things will happen!!!!" It's all self defense at the point the door opens.

As I thought I seen nothing in the Breeze about this today. Or did I miss it?

I hope your buddies friend wasn't hurt too bad. Ouch, beat with a golf club.

The cager will probably get off with just taking an anger management class.
