One of the reasons I selected the Specialized Tricross Sport Triple is that the Specialized website says it is flight deck compatible.
I have a flight deck system on my nice road bike, and I want to be able to use the head on this new utility/commuter bike.

From the Specialized website (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=22307):

BRAKE LEVERS Shimano Tiagra, 9-speed STI, flight deck compatible w/ brake lever extensions
...
SHIFT LEVERS Shimano Tiagra, 9-speed STI, flight deck compatible
From my LBS: "Those levers are not flight deck compatible".

WTF???

Mystery solved. The older Tiagra ST-4400 levers were compatible with Flight Deck, but the new ST-4500 levers, which have a graphic display of the gear you are in, are no longer compatible with Flight Deck. So they're swapping the 4500s with some 4400s.

I have a tricross sport and the levers are not flight deck compatible. I have the levers with the little window to see what gear you're in.

Those are the ST-4500s which I'm sure are fine as long as you're not trying to use flight deck.

Anyway, the setup with the ST-4400s works great. Not only do I see which gear I'm in with the flight deck, but it also gives my virtual cadence.
