Inspired by the other guy's thread. I've averaged about 400 miles a month for the last ten years. A bit over 4,000 a year. But in 2005 I did over 7,300 with the highest month mileage at 960 miles.

I did a century on a Saturday and still had Sunday to do a 40 miler to hit the 1,000 mile mark. Friends were encouraging me to go out and do it but I wussed out! I still don't regret not doing the 40 miler. 960 is more than enough. Plus it leaves a PB to be beaten!:D

What's your highest month? MarkAdam, you've got mucho miles this year!:D

I rode 14,700 miles in 1976. My biggest 30-day period (July 15, 1976 to August 13, 1976) was roughly 3350 miles. My biggest calendar month would have been somewhere between 2800 and 3000 miles on one of my transcontinental trips between 1976 and 1980, on a bike loaded with 20+ pounds, including camping gear.

Ah, but that was all long ago!

That's a really good month. I remember when I used to do 250 a month. I was proud and it is great when you think about it. I joined Bikejournal and started seeing what riders were doing. Helped motivate me to do more. Just got better and better. I did a 3000 mile month then the ohter guy did 400. Then I figured I could do it, so I did!

Next thing I know I was down from 260 to 220 lbs. Some people think I like to bring up accomplishments cause I like to brag. Not at all true, ok some. But I think of it as being a motivator! I have a friend down from 380 down to 230 that did 200 mile rides and completed the California Triple Crown series. I have a bud that is about 5'5 , 280 lbs and absolutely kicks *** on the roadbike. We'd ride together and he'd shhhmoke plenty of skinny guys!:D

I had a gal about 5'0 tall and 250 lbs absolutely destroy me ridng up a hill on the Rosarito ride. I could not believe how she dusted my behind!

I went down from 260 to 22 and kicked *** on mtn rides mainly cause other riders said I was too big to climb. That was before I whipped they azzes!

One thing I notice is that many riders don't do enjoy some aspects of riding cause so many others say you can't I say BS! YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU HAVE THE DESIRE! It's not easy but it can be done!

So C'mon, list your miles here! Who gives a **** if it 20 miles a month? WHo cares if it's 200 miles a month? Next month you just may do 25, 205!

This is where you get your motor started, by other riders telling you it can be done! Like Nike says, JUST DO IT!!!!!!!! I love that saying! I don't know how many times I've been on a mtn ride thinking I feel weak. Then I start saying to myself, "JUST DO IT". God honest truth! My best on a timed event was 123 out of 400 serious climbers on a 10,000 ft ride. 60-70 lbs heavier than most the others but I 'Just DO'ed IT'!

BTW, my bud that went down from 380 to 230, did it without surgery. More than I could ever do. I did always seem to edge him out on the bike rides but really WHO CARES? He did it, more than I can say for myself!

So what's your best month! If you're an up and coming rider, Post it here then you go beat the MOFO by at least one more mile next month!

I've averaged about 500 a month since May but this month I did 627 preparing for my new commute. I gotta kick it up in september though because our office moves October 2nd. It'll be 42 miles a day and I really want to do it at least 4 days a week, preferably 5. Should help whip me into shape quicker then I'm going now.

That's a whole lotta miles too. I think about commuting to work as it's only 7 miles but been so hot, like 105. Maybe when it cools down a bit. No showers at work and I don't like the sweaty feeling while working. We only work halfdays on Fridays so I'm sure I'd take the long way home!:D

I rode 143 miles in August. Thanks for the enthusiastic post, Mr Beanz! Otherwise I wouldn't have posted in this thread, but I AM proud of that, especially considering my bike was in the shop 8 of those 31 days, AND I'd only ridden about 60 miles total in the 2 months prior (first 2 months on the bike)! Assuming it's repaired soon and stays that way, I plan to ride considerably more next month :) At least 200 miles... 300? 400??? Will my odometer hit 1000 by year's end??? We'll see :)

I wish I lived near you, I'd build your wheel for ya! And maintain it! 8 more days of riding, that's another fitty miles or so!;)

I was at 349.2 in April and should have been close to 500 in May, but then I got hurt and well...but I did do 244.7 this month, my first month back from injury. My goal for the year is shot, but my secondary goal to hit 500 a month is still a go and I will have it by Dec 31.

Well I'll post some miles: Best month so far was May, when I was getting in shape for my 62 mile birthday ride, logged 451 miles. Unfortunately that became my biking high lite for the year and I slacked off to 326 in June. Then heat and humidity kept me inside for July and August, logging 277 and 230. Sept is starting off with great weather, if I do complete 50 miles this Sunday, I will also go for 60 miles next Saturday and should hopefully fill in the other days with enough miles to challenge the 451 high. Is it too early to think 500 miles for Sept.?

Mr. Beanz
09-01-07, 04:22 PM
Good job guys. Some might think that 300-400 is not much but it is! I almost had a grand one month and that to me looks impressive. But other months have been 300/400/500. I don't think most people realize how much dedication and effort it takes to even hit 200. Those that do them with injuries, that's dedication. I have some buds that swear they are serious cyclist and only do 100 some months. Most of you are kicking their butts. AND they're 150 skinny dudes.!:D

Gina (my wife) and I were on the trail today doing a 40 miler. One section runs along the fwy. I said to her," you think those people would consider us crazy, riding our bikes in this heat while they drive in the AC?". She said she herself considers us crazy! If we're crazy, so are all you guys even if it's 5 or 10 miles!:D

Never even thought about looking at the running 30 days, yet another metric to add to my spreadsheet. :D Looking at that I did 380.0 from April 6 to May 5, which is interesting since I my injury happened on May 5 right after a 40 mile ride in some nasty 90 degree heat.

Thirty miles in August… on a single speed cruiser, and the new hip is still working fine. (My orthopedic surgeon did a fine job, he should be proud :D ) But, most of all, my wife and I had fun doing it.

Maybe next month I can double that… and so on and so on.

Hey, we all had to start somewhere.:p

Just thought that I would post, so maybe some of the other newbie Clydes wouldn’t feel so intimidated. One mile at a time…every time for me.

But, I am inspired by the rest of your accomplishments.

Reminds of something I saw somewhere, not sure where:

Hip replacement Ouch!.....$30,000

So I'm looking at some of these mileages, I spend approx 36 hrs in the saddle to get 500 miles, so to get a 1000 for the month I would have to ride the bike around 80 hrs. Now I think I could actually manage to sit on my bike for that long and not become sore and hate the bike, but I really don't know where I would find the time, as it is I spend nearly 2.5 hrs a day ( 4 days a week) and usually a 3 hr ride on sat. so if I wanted to get 1000 miles for the month on my regular routine that would be about 250 a week, increase my riding to 6 days a week and that would be about 45 miles a day. A thousand Miles a month would be cool, but right now I just see where I'm going to find the time :), guess I'll shoot for another 500 mile month in Sept.

Let me explain mine a little better. My girlfriend is training for a Ironman so we have spent a lot of time in the saddle. Most weekends include a 5 to 7 hour ride on at least one day....I ride on Mon and Wed for sure.....most of the time both weekend days.....this year I have had a goal about doing centurys...I am on my 14th so far.....so 1400 of my 5000 this year....plus I have no wife or kids.....I sure don't want to make other feel bad because they did not do 1000 in a month....every mile is a good mile on a bike in my opinion...

no worries, I would love to be able to do 1000 a month, but I just don't think that is a realistic goal for me. For others it is. I just have to be realistic in my goal setting for the year, and actually that's great that you've done 14 century's I'm doing my second in two weeks, I'm hoping to do at least 5 next year, but this is really the first year that I've got serious about road biking.

Mr. Beanz
09-02-07, 12:56 PM
Does take too much time to do it year in year out. I did my 960 in 2005. I had set ou to do the century a month thing with a target of 12 that year. I got a little carried away and did 23!:D

After that year I decided to ride more with the wife spending fun time together. Next year I plan to do mega miles again as I plan to do the King of the Mountains challenge and the Triple Crown. Wife says go for it as she's satisfied with the last two years of riding. I'm sure the next year I will be down to 50 miles a month!:p

One mile a month is an accomplishment while all of life's lil obstacles!

I'm just hoping for a century before the end of the year. I did 51 yesterday and 31 today - my best weekend so far. My best month was 400 - then my knee started hurting and I've not been able to do that since - but I'm working my way back up. When I was about 14 or 15, I used to ride 30 or 40 miles a day almost all summer - maybe take 2 days a week off. Most of that was on a 20" bike with a banana seat and high-rise bars. :D:D

I got my road bike/first started riding in mid-May and my first logged ride was on 5/12. My May mileage was 102 mi, and by July I had done 315 mi for the month. Ditto for August, but that included a full week off the bike involuntarily (vacation and moving to a new place).

My odometer currently stands at 1083 mi for the year so far. I know I'll break my PB this month, probably by a long shot.

I feel like a wuss with all the big number you guys are doing. This year is my best so far. I'll end the year with about 3,000 miles. About 6 months of the year are tough here in Illinois with short days (no riding after work) ... and sub 30 degree days (long tights and a ski mask for the Saturday group ride). My best month has been just over 600 miles ... June. It was helped by a 3 day "mini-tour" that was 200 miles.

Hmmm... Best month (34 + 4 * 3 * 13) = 190. (7 years ago on my navigator)

The last month: 3*28 + 9 * 4 *3 = 84 + 108 = 192... TADA. New high.

Of course, this is approximate. Keeping records is something I don't care for, but I can get a pretty good idea. The last month is definitely an all time high for me. (I just remembered another 9 miler and a few other short jaunts. :) )

Methinks a nice GPS system is called for. I wonder how simple it is to just turn it on, log my ride, and upload the rides on occasion. Lazy, I know, but it would be sweet! Anybody have experience using GPS for logging miles and routes on a daily basis?

128 in August. Started riding on 8/10 by borrowing my son's bike. Got my Trek 7100 on 8/23. 78 miles on the Trek so far. Hope to hit 200 in September.

Well, my September numbers are in. I have to take the rest of the month off to attend my sister's wedding.

230 Miles in September and I lost two days with a broken spoke. Hope to have an even bigger month in October.
