hey all...

been an avid rider for a while..have owned a series of bikes from a racing moser to antique single-gear clunkers.

currently trying to figure out what i should get for a daily commuter/performance bike...something that will be fun to ride, can take fenders, but can be left outside during the day without making me paranoid.

i'm thinking that the giant fcr3 might fit the bill...would be glad to hear any comments. seems like a solid and fast frame...i'd probably swap the stem for something lower and have a better seat and clips left over from my old commuter bike (bottom bracket seized on it and couldn't be extracted from the frame).

cheers all...

Hello sans soleil, visit the regional forums and say hi to the Eastern Canada folks, and enjoy reading some of the forums for more hints on a good commuter.

Welcome to BF!

Welcome, and what route you aiming to commute along? I admit I've found Toronto drivers to be less evil than some others I have encountered in my biking lives, although there are many evil exceptions.

What bike you use to commute depends in part on where you plan to leave it during the day. If it's going to be locked outside somewhere, you need the shabbiest, most inconspicuous bike you can find, with a huge clunky lock. You tried looking for something second hand? I guess I'm lucky. I use the windowsill of my office as a safe, no-need-to-lock parking spot.

ya...i've had 2 bikes stolen in the last couple of years.

my commute is downtown: queen/bathurst to bay/bloor. i do a lot of riding on the weekends (fairly long rides..leslie spit, waterfront trail etc.) and ride throughout the winter.

the fcr3 is relatively cheap ($499) and has a nice tight frame, decent componentry and proper road gearing (52-tooth front chainring).

i think i'm going to pick it up this afternoon...

Did you get the bike? Do you like it?

yes...got the fcr3...really quite an amazing bike for the price (no wonder they're sold out everywhere).

quick & nimble...light, but feels solid enough for city riding...
