Fifty Plus (50+) - What's the strangest thing you've seen while riding?

For me it was a couple girls about 12 years old walking a goat on the MUP. They had it outfitted with saddle bags. Unfortunately the goat was not used to bicycles but I narrowly avoided it anyway. I thought that was the most unusual until yesterday when I was riding the towpath in the Cuyahoga Valley Natl Park south of Cleveland. Encountered an older guy and his wife walking three dogs. Not so unusual, then I noticed the macaw on the guy's shoulder. Never seen anyone take their parrot for a walk before.

This morning, the largest bobcat I've ever seen trotted across the highway about 25 yards in front of me. I also found two pair of Justin alligator boots in good condition in the bar ditch several months ago.

I don't know that this qualifies as strange but, a grizzly. Big healthy looking one that stepped out on the road about 100 feet ahead of me. It happened on the ride in my avatar. On the same road at different times, a black bear that just stayed on the side of the road as I passed and a group of 8 bighorn sheep that were within a few feet also. Oh, and several mountain goat too.

A guy in a pickup yesterday slowed down and yelled at me out his window.

And not for the usual reason, he was offering me a smoke.
Supposed to be funny, I guess. I did laugh.

On one ride I found a wallet with $200 cash in it and a medallion with the letters OU on it.

This spring I saw a young duck fall out of the sky right in front of me. I stopped to look and it was lying on it's back flapping it's wings and kicking it's feet. I turned it over and it shook itself and flew away. There were no wires or tall trees nearby that it could have run into. I think it must have momentarily forgotten how to fly.

One day riding on a rail trail, I kept seeing dead chipmonks right on the trail. 4 in all. Are rail trails where chipmunks go to die?

One dark and stormy night I saw a pine tree stretched across the road at a height of 27". I know it was 27" because a moment after I saw it, I wedged the front tire of my 10 speed under it and went flying over it.

The bike remained standing perfectly upright, undamaged. I sustained a major knee injury.

Other than that, lets see. I raced a coyote for 100 yards in the Los Penasquitos Reserve and on the same ride stopped a bobcat from cornering a bunny.

But the weirdest thing I saw while riding was a 3-day long convoy of military trucks heading south on Highway 41 in October of 1962.

This IS possible! I have test ridden about 8 road bikes.

I'm sure watching me would have been an entertaining experience. Especially that first time I tried to use brifters.

I saw a white bike squished on the track while turning hot laps on my track bike at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

When I was 15 and living in the south bronx, I saw a passed out drunk woman with cockroaches crawling all over her. She was lying on the sidewalk.

A scene straight out of a teen movie. Whilst cycling on a towpath witnessed young lad and girl. He stared lovingly at her and predictably cycled into the canal.

I saw dog walkers step to the side of the trail and make their dogs sit as I passed.

I saw a horse rider unfold a long pooper scooper and scrape stuff off to the side of the trail.

I had a motorist stop and wave me across a road at a trail crossing. (Do you have any idea how complicated the laws are on that matter. In CT if you present yourself at the crossing on foot and walk you bike across you have the legal right of way. If astride you bike riding it would appear that you are a vehicle.) Either way watch out for the car behind the one that stopped.

The dead guy and the cop were different stories .. I don't think the dead guy was giving oral sex to the cop.:eek: .. unless the cop couldn't get any action in the rest room with the Senator.:D

As a new rider, I have nothing to top these stories. We have a MUP between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, and I'm amazed at the number of people who gather at various spots just to hang out. This path runs through some poorer parts of town in places. There are the usual pockets of down-and-outers drinking and loafing about, but also I see small groups of people who look like recent immigrants just hanging out, sometimes with kids. And not in particularly scenic portions of the path. Reminds my husband of the King's Road in George RR Martin's "A song of ice and fire" series.

Reported before but out on the trails in the Middle of nowhere and came across 6 or so Naked foreign students sunbathing. Must have been foreign because when I asked them the way to a town- They stood and pointed out the direction without any Coyness at all.

You know? Funny you should mention this. On my ride this morning I saw two dead field mice within about 100' right in the middle of the road.

My usual Saturday ride takes me out to one of the largest nude beaches on the east coast, the north end of Playalinda Beach, which is just north of Kennedy Space Center. Believe me, most of the people on clothing-optional beaches should opt to keep their clothes on.

I chased a couple of schools of minnows down the MUP this last week when the river overtopped its banks and surprised a squirrel a mile later so much that he ran head first into a light standard with quite a loud bong :)

I was abducted by aliens while on a ride. They had big heads, large black eyes and wore lycra. I remember they did not speak but I could understand them -- kind of like telepathic images. They "told" me they were conducting human doping experiments. Boy, could I ride faster and longer after that experience!

While riding my bike to work in Norway, A group of four women riding in the nude caught up with me (really naked as in no clothing, not just gadgets). We didn't ride together very far because I was so flustered...I just could organise my breathing:D It was part of some wedding ritual. You see bizarre stuff like that all the time there.

And there it is... proof of global warming.

This moring I cut through a subdivison on the Indiana/Michigan state line (not a usual route for me) and about half way though a came across a small flock of wild turkeys crossing the road into a wood lot. Not something I expect to see around here at all.

many years ago about a mile from where I sit right now I saw a woman letting her dog out with only panties on. Her, not the dog. I was much younger then and did run off the road. I did not hurt my bike. Hum, letting her dog out with her puppies out, never thought of that.

Ain't that the truth! Around where I live, eagles (bald and golden) often get injured being hit by cars as they tend to feed on all the deer carcass that have been hit by cars. They are so big they just can't get up and away fast enough. :(
