Well i went out last night after work to do an endurance ride aiming to stay under 75%mhr for about 60 miles. After about 40 miles i thought what the hell.....today is the day i'm gonna do my first century. Most of the ride was in a huge park (8 miles loops on tarmac, couple of hills, nothing huge) so traffic was minimal and having set of aout 5.30pm part of it was in the dark.

It all got a bit wierd after dark when cars are locked out so there was nothing but me and the deer that roam the park. Infact I had a couple of very near misses when deer had wandered onto the road and suddenly appeared out of the dark! It was however quite nice getting some tunes going knowing there was no cars about.

My previous long ride was 60miles in 3.5 hours (with a friend). I felt strong all the way last night apart from a couple of moments when i felt slightly nauseous for a min or two. Eating something tended to sort this out. By the end i was of course glad to finish but felt strong and could have gone on if required. Here are the stats:

Dist: 100.6 miles
Time: 6hr46min (saddle time - only a couple of quick pee stops)
Avg speed: 14.7
Avg HR: 75%

Intake:
2 x 750 ml of water
1 x 750 ml of electrolyte drink
1 x gel
1 x banana
1 x pbj bagel
Most of a power bar

Am not fussed about the time as for the most part i was trying to stay at/under 75% mhr so think i could have gone quicker. I'm aiming to do a 160mile ride at the end of september (with a 4 hour break after 60 miles). SO far i've only done two 60 milers before this ride and a couple of 40 milers. I'm in the gym most days during the week doing intervals and recovery rides and tring to do these longer rides at the weekend.

Any advice/comments on the below questions would be greatly appreciated:

1) Do you think i am on track with my training for the 160miler?

2) What other long rides should i plan before tapering?

3) Does my nutrition sound about right?

Many thanks!

Nutrition sounds right if it worked for you. I'd say keep riding centuries and 200ks to prepare for the 160 mile but keep in mind the effect of hills if this is flatter than what you're preparing for.

Also, using a cue sheet takes some practice so it may be worth going out on the roads for a while. I'm not sure how you could stand an 8 mile loop that many times, so it may be a nice break.

well i wasn't planning on doing a century - just a few laps. it was either laps or riding round central london on a friday night after dark!

If Londons like Philly, riding late at night is kind of nice due to the almost complete absence of cars.

plenty of cars am afraid - most off them driven by a-holes!

Why the 4 hour break?

Thanks for sharing your data as I am trying to build up my mileage as well. May I ask your age to calibrate your results (very good) with mine? Thanks.

I've always been told 1 bottle an hour in liquid. You had 3 in 6, which could catch you over time. Also figure about 200-300 calories _MAX_ per hour intake while riding. Check out hammernut.com they have some good guides on this stuff.
