View Full Version : Alternative Training
After not really doing much for exercise besides walking the dog for the past 3 bike-less days, I'm seriously starting to go nuts. Did some strength training this morning (circuit from the Abs Diet book - great exercises in there), and I'm thinking of doing some swimming if I can get brave enough to show my swimsuit-clad self among the serious swimmers who use the pool I'd go to. I think the dog is going to have to learn to sometimes walk faster and with less stopping-and-sniffing, and I'm also thinking of signing up for a water-aerobics class or possibly an actual adult swimming class, to get a better technique and not feel quite so silly doing laps.
What do the rest of you do for exercise/training when cycling isn't an option? Or in addition to cycling?
Swing dancing :)
Get the dog to run more ;)

oooooh swing dancing sounds funnnnnn :D You don't live near here, do you? ;)
Absolutely nothing. No bike, no exercise.
Weights and a stationary bike or ellipse machine
If it were up to the dogs, I would walk 12 hours a day. I trained them not to sniff unless I tell them "sniff".

Unfortunately no - but there are some scenes that are a few hours from you. Not big scenes but fun nonetheless :)

Walking is great exercise. I also go to the gym 3 days a week for a couple of hours each time - that's probably a bit much but I have a hard time doing anything half way. I've been lifting really heavy but decided yesterday to change the workout - about 1/2 the weight and many many reps. My shoulders are very sore today from doing that last night.

Find a good deep creek/rive to swim in, there are some near you, and the resistance of the current rocks for building the muscles used for swimming.

Swim class would be a very good idea, but if you didn't if you found a masters swim team that would let you swim with them a lot of the swimmers would be more than willing to help teach you, it is a hard thing to learn, and many of them are very understanding of that.
I swim regularly in addition to biking (I often use it as a recovery workout the evening after hard mornings on the bike), and I'm going to learn to run over the winter since I want to do some triathlons next year.

Those low weight, high rep workouts are great for building muscular endurance, I did many hours of that in high school as a swimmer and it really paid off back then. I'm slowly getting back into it and rather enjoying it.

Walking, in fact I do more walking than anything. Find it great to relieve my bad back and looking at the dog enjoying himself makes my day. Like you I am keen to start swimming again but don't have the guts. Keep saying to myself when I get down to such a weight I will start going but it never happens. I also try and use up alot of energy in work. Running up and down stairs etc. It all adds up.

Swimming is a great workout for weight loss, will also probably be very good for your back. Don't be afraid of the weight thing, especially since winter is coming in and your going to have to go to the Y or something to swim there will be many people there who are swimming or doing water aerobics to lose weight. Believe me you won't be the only overweight person there. Kinda like starting to wear bike clothes, first couple times are a little embarrassing, but after that it'll feel really natural.

And if it's not done correctly, it's high impact? :p That would be what, forgetting to turn around when reaching the sides? :D
DON'T go in the jacuzzi at the Y.

My other exercises are endless.
Walking, jogging, running, elliptical, swimming, dirt bike riding, weight lifting, basketball, tennis, racquetball, golf (walking the course), rowing machine (least favorite), volleyball, sand volleyball, softball, frisbee, etc......
Anything I can do to have fun while exercising. The wife and I are thinking of a canoe to use at a small lake about 10 miles from us. If we didn't have to ride our bicycles on a major highway, we would leave it over there and bike over and back. We still haven't decided.
There are many forms of exercise that will help you and you just have to try some. Our YMCA has many different fitness programs like water aerobics, Yoga, Pilates, Jazzercise, swimming, and other many activities. Maybe you can find something similar at a place near you.
Good luck with what you find.

I've really got into hiking/walking, even though I thought I'd hate it. climbing hills. find the steepest hills you can find and go. in ATL we have stone mountain. I make it my goal to never stop, no matter how slow I go as long as I don't stop I'm ok. in LA I climb the hollywood hills. hills=good workout.

Try taking a spin class at a gym. I thought I would kick their butts when I first took one, but they kicked mine. Our instructor has us out of the saddle 80% of the time and I found it really helped with climbing the hills on my real bike, plus I was burning 600-700 calories a class. A short upper body workout with weights and core muscle exercises helped me too.
I do an elliptical trainer for 30 to 45 minutes a day 5 days a week in addition to the cycling. And I do push ups and sit ups. That's about it. Oh and the dog walking thing occasionally but my dog doesn't have near the endurance I do and wears out too quickly. lol

DON'T go in the jacuzzi at the Y.
There is no way I can share sweat with other people, thus no gym for me. The jacuzzi thought makes my stomach turn. There is NO WAY to keep that stuff clean enough to suit me.
What I do for fun and exercise when not riding a bike involves small dogs, lots of walking carrying about 20 pounds of stuff, and digging.:D
