You know how your mind wanders while on a long ride?
Well, a few weeks ago I was riding along and started thinking about my birthday, which is today. I decided to do a 2x age ride, 102 miles. Then I stated thinking about doing a pi(age) ride. I knew I couldn’t do 3.1416 x 51 miles, so I thought about doing 3.1416 x 51 kilometers, and I started doing the math in my head to figure out how far that is and estimated it around 160 km. And I realized that 160 km is about 100 miles, which is approximately 2 x51.
So I went home and did the math:
2 x 51 = 102 miles = 164.15 km
3.1416 x 51 = 160.22 km
That means that pi kilometers is within 3% of 2 miles. A strange coincidence? An ancient human artifact? Or further evidence of a pervasive control of human affairs by space aliens, as it has been since time immemorial? We report, you decide.
So I tried the ride today and got about 71 (114 km) miles into it and decided to knock off because it was over 90 (32 C) and very sunny. I’ll do the other 31 tomorrow.
