Bicycle Mechanics - How do fix a creaking Handlebar?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've had the stem and handlebar on my bike for about eight years. My bike started making a creaking noise as soon as i put any pressure on the handlebar; I did not have any creaking sound the day before; the weather was great, no rain.
I've tried to tightened the bolt but no luck.
Do i need a new handlebar or stem?
I have a threaded stem and would like to know how i can use a threadless road stem without changing to an unthreaded fork.

Take the stem out and grease it, put it back in. Loosen the handlebar clamp, grease the center of the bar, put it back in.
You can buy a quill steerer post that fits into the threaded headset. Performance has them for $20.

Ditto with the grease advice, it's a wonder you haven't had to do this earlier. Why would you want to ugly up a bike that has a quill stem be replacing it with a piece of hardware that would make an oilrig worker blush? (like the one in the pic above) I realize that I'm evolving into a sophisticated retro-grouch while the world around me devolves in a tattooed mass of grunting apes. DEVO was right! Sorry, I digress.

I agree with your aesthetic reaction, chas55. The only thing I can imagine is that it's hard to find removeable-faceplace quill stems, although they do exist.
But a lovely, sculpted Nitto quill stem is a thing of beauty that no bolt-on could ever hope to match.

Agreed....Nittos are so elegantly crafted. The newer Salsa quilled stems have removable face plates. Even the Profiles, but they are butt ugly.
Deda Murex and 3TTT Motus are fairly nice removable
face quill stems.

OK, Loki, that settles it. We're not gonna let you put one of those awful ugly quill posts on your bike! :D

You mean I'm NOT alone????? Hurrah!!!! You guys have made my day!
ps: there are plenty of quills from the age of elegance on ebay for a mere pittance. The convenience of a removable face type like the 3ttt pictured is obvious, looks like a nice unit.
