Bicycle Mechanics - Rather loud gears here.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes, first post.
The bike-- second hand mint '06 GT Series Four.
Excuse the lack of bike talk.
It's a triple, when the front is in the middle one, and the back cassette is in the three smallest, it makes a loudish noise while pedalling. These happen to my ideal gears for my perfect cadence.
I haven't had it for long, so on next pay day, I am taking it to my fab LBS for a once over. Until then, what is the best way to rectify/minimise this? If there is an good sites for maintence, that would be good too.
Thanks all, love the forums.

there is an adjustment you can make at the rear der that allows you to align the rear der with the cogs... rotate the adjuster clockwise or counter clockwise until the noise goes away... bear in mind that if you adjust this to make the noise go away, it will cause noise to appear in the middle chain ring bigger cogs combinations, but it will get rid of the noise in your most used combination.

Mine gets louder when it needs a new chain. Measure the length of 12 chain links. It will be 12 inches with a new chain, 12 1/8 inches on one that's completely worn out. I replace mine at just over 12 1/16 inches. BTW, measure from the 1 inch to the 13 inch marks if using a tape measure, as the end of the tape is not accurate enough for this.

What Nathan describes is normal. The chainline is not ideal in that situation. You can trim the front derailleur so the chain won't rub in the highest cogs but there may be some rubbing in the lowest cogs. It's all a trade off.

Have a look down as you're pedalling. Is the chain rubbing on the front derailleur cage? Does the noise pulse with each pedal stroke?
