I currently run an old shimano 9 speed double groupo with more recently acquired 9 speed bar end shifters. I am considering upgrading to campy centaur. I wanted to know if I can do the upgrade a piece or two at a time.

Step one: Add campy front and rear derailleurs.

Q1: Will the campy rear (long cage) derailleur work with the shimano index bar end shifters and the shimano cogset?

Q2: Can I use the 10 speed derailleur with the nine speed hub and shifter? I think it will work since the derailleur movement will be controlled by the shimano shifters, no? I figure at worst, I'll have to run the shifters in friction mode until I get a campy rear hub.

Q3: Am I right in assuming little compatibility problems on the front derailleur since it is friction controlled anyway?

Step 2: Add campy BB and crankset.

Q4: I would still be operating with the shimano shifters and rear hub, but if it worked in step one, it should work here also, no?

Step 3: Add Campy hubs and shifters.

Q5: Am I now completely converted, or is there something I forgot?

I don't believe Shimano shifters are compatible with a campy rear derailleur. The only difference from a a Campy 10sp deraileur and 9sp is the jockey wheels. I would change the crankset BB as a last step since a Shimano one will work no problem with campy.

I differ somewhat from Kev and feel that as long as the shifter and the cassette are same make, the derailleur would not be a problem as long as
it can cover the range, which assumes the setups will both be road and not
an ATB cluster. The der will do what the shifter wants whether indexed or friction. I think your approach will work in the sequence you propose. Shimano spline (BB) is unique to Shimano for patent reasons, which is why there are two spline patterns: Shimano and Isis. Campy is sqare taper BB,
with a slightly different taper than Shimano sq taper, but Shimano does not make sq taper 8-9-10spd cranks. They used to make 8spd sq taper. Steve

Steve is correct IF Campag. and Shimano derailleurs have equal "gain," i.e., the ratio between horizontal motion of the jockey cage and motion at the end of the control cable.
