If I was going to buy a Trek X0-1 frameset (frame and fork) what would you suggest having it fitted with when purchased? Am going to ride it up to 50 miles on the road and across country (grassy fields with hills, sandy to nice dirt paths, also with hills). Am a 5' 5" woman, fairly strong, run, ride 3-day event horses (think: triathlon for horses) which includes XC jumping at a gallop over solid fences, into water over fences first, down banks - your basic cyclocross biking but on a horse. Thought this would be fun too.

I've beat the hell out of my X-01 for the past 2 years on the stock set up. I'm 6' 185lbs too and the bontrager select wheels have actually held up much better than I thought they ever would, albeit fairly heavy, they've stayed true as much as can be expected of them, and no broken spokes.

That being said, the bike is completely stripped down right now in my basement awaiting "upgrade/makeover" parts :D

I'm using some spare parts that I have and buying some new, but it will be set up as follows:

-Size 58 frame ('06 X-01)
-Stock fork (kinesis Alu - this will be swapped for a carbon fork at somepoint)
-Bontrager select wheels w/ vittoria EVO cross tires (wheels will be replaced when/if these explode - thinking velocity deep V's laced to ultegra hubs - bomb proof)
-Oval concepts R700 stem
-Oval concepts R700 bars
-Avid shorty 6 canti's (1 arm is a avid 4 due to a stripped retention thread)
-Shimano 105 9spd shifters; 105 FD & RD (12-26 SRAM cassette)
-Shimano R700 compact crank (50/34 - will probably switch out the 34 for a 36 though)
-Shimano PD-959 mtb pedals
-Thomson setback seatpost
-Selle Italia Max Flite saddle

EDIT: putting in a new headset (cane creek S-3) too. CK would be nice, but overkill for this build.

The fork is truely a boat anchor at this point, and if I was going to be racing this season it would be replaced sooner... however I have an f'd up wrist (plate & 9 screws) that needs some attention this fall so no racing for me :(

For something like what you're going to use it for, the bontrager jones cx tires that come stock are really great for on/off road combo riding. They have very small nubs on them and give plenty of traction off road, but they're not so huge that your whole body is vibrating while riding on road. Personally, I really like compact cranks on cross bikes. A 50/36 w/ a 12-26 or 12-27 (10spd) in the back I think is ideal. I don't care for the stock 46/38 cranks that cross bikes come with... the 50 ring gives you more speed on the road.

Good luck with it though... it's a good solid frame that will serve you well.

Have you weighed the fork? I'm curious if the aluminum fork is actually that much heavier than a carbon fork. For example, the Redline aluminum fork on cyclocrossworld is listed at 600g, while the Redline carbon fork is listed at 595g. That's not much more than the AlphaQ which is listed at 550g.

Haven't weighed it, but it's noticeably heavy... google tells me 850g+ (steel steerer tube).

stock ....but change the fork for a carbon fork and aheadset style steerer

My XO-1 has a Shimonolo group set. Single ring with 8-speed 11-27. Steal fork. One bar end shifter in friction mode.

Sounds to me however that for the OP stock set up ought to work out just fine.

Surely it has an aheadset from stock? I don't see any quills on expensive treks...

If you have small hands, you might benefit from either the special Shimano shifters or Campagnolo ergo shifters.
